How much to pay?

1987 944 NA one owner. Red, black leather, generally in good shape. Needs tires. Has 198k miles. Needs a few small things to make it nice. How much should my dad pay? Since I got my 924 he's been wanting a 944, so he asked me to ask y'all. It is rolling on phone dials in nice condition. Thanks

Needs tires? That is pretty high mileage. Has the engine ever been rebuilt? If not, I wouldn't pay too much. You said it needs things to make it nice. Without pictures and more detail I'd guess in the $2,500-$4,500 range

It's been really well maintained as far as t chain and everything. Not sure about the status on a rebuild or not. The car is well sorted. It needs a few little bezels and things in the interior and some paint touch up, but its a very solid 10 footer or even closer. He wants $2500 for it, my dad offered $1700 since he's a little bit of an ass

$2,500 is a pretty fair price.

That's about what I was thinking, maybe like $3000. It's nice enough to pay that.

2500 if it has not had FOES (front of engine service) maybe 3K if it has and it it all in order. These cars are a constant work in progress the thing to look for when buying is the major service, timing belts/ water pump, has the engine ever been rebuilt, has the engine ever been opened. Who did the service and are there records. Answers to these questions will make a big difference.

Regards
Dave

So, was your dad's $1,700 accepted?
How high will he go if they counter?
I paid $1,700 for an inspected runner with 4 out of 10 paint but runs really well at 250k.
Let us know the outcome..

A deal has no been met yet. He's pretty stern at $1700 but I'm going to inspect the car Tuesday and give him the signal to go higher or stay where he is.

Now here's question two; should I swoop in and buy it? Like some other 924 owners, I find myself wanting a little... More... When it comes to getting up and going.

Just keep the 924. If you buy the 87 you're just buying someone else's problem.

The problem is 200K is close to the end-of-life. Max, I'd guess, is that it'd be within 25-50K from a new engine or transaxle - or major rebuild thereof. So even though it was really well cared for, there's only so much you can do with it.

I think your dad is on track with his $1,700 offer. You're buying a project car waiting to happen, and they just aren't worth that much.
