Carrera GT hood scoop on 951 (functional)
Guys,
My next mod steps will be more toward body and weight reduction on my 951. I want to install a hood scoop (GT Racing part #271) and possibly even a whole fiberglass hood (part #270) since it seems a shame to saw a hole in my hood. Then I would route the air directly to the factory turbo airbox. Has anyone done this and come up with a decent setup? The idea floating around in my head involves a hose going to a custom fabbed topless airbox with a foam gasket, which would be plumbed to replace the factory cold air intake pipe down to the lower fender. Also some sort of screen included when I install the scoop itself to keep large chunks and critters out of there! So, when the hood closes, the scoop opening mates to this box and seals. Sort of a "ram air" deal. I suppose the air filter element could even be housed in that intake box. Or eliminate the stock airbox and plumb right into the air sensor unit. I know on the 924 or N/A 944 that low cold air intake can be bad if one were to hit a bunch of standing water (water into the engine if you slug a puddle really hard) How much truth there is in that I am not sure, but I avoid deep puddles or runoff anyway. During monsoon season here I have to drive through that sort of thing occasionally. The real goal, of course, is more air, and I won't lie, I like hoodscoops. There, I said it. Any thoughts? I wouldn't worry about the water part.
I would first fabricate your plenum and seal. Then get the FG hood and get it aligned/fit where you want, then transfer the plenum shape onto the hood. Just put some paint on the seal you fabricate for the intake plenum, lower the hood, et voila. Cut out the resulting shape. The hardest part is contouring the bottom of the scoop to where you want it on the hood, the scoop does not come pre-contoured. You'll have to come up with a method to trace the contour of where you're going to put it on the hood. Believe it or not, a tower of tall 1x1 Legos layed down on the hood works great! I would bolt the scoop to the hood with a rubber seal. So you can remove one from the other for repair if necessary, that way you don't need to paint the whole hood if your scoop has a hole in it. Take care! Last edited by FrenchToast; 09-09-2012 at 01:47 PM.. |

Excellent advice, just what I was hoping for! Thanks very much!!
I am definitely going to start this right away. I have high temp 2" tubing already, and I have a sheet metal fab shop at work (but I have to provide materials myself). The Lego idea is brilliant! I would have just spent hours trimming a peice of card stock or something. I'll keep a record of my progress on this thread with pics. Thanks, FrenchToast! Jeff

Well, I have settled on the center forward location (as mounted on at least one variation of the Hugo Boss car). This puts me in the middle of the center support stamping of the underhood reinforcement strip. This will require me to weld thin steel tubing or rod in it's place (to minimize airflow impact) to keep the hood integrity. This location will GREATLY simplify my airbox solution when I get there. Sure is not much room under a 951 hood for stuff like this...
Hopefully starting the splitter this weekend, and ordering the hood scoop soon after from GT Racing. I also want the Le Mans longer/deeper rear spoiler. All this will likely finish off my cosmetic/exterior mods except for wheels. Anyone have a used hoodscoop they want to sell (just like the GT Racing one)? Or the rear spoiler I am talking about? Then it is on to Carrera GT non-popup lights. I'm going for a kind of mild version of this car. I just want mine to be a little different than the average 944, with a "nod" to the race lineage. I'll probably leave it whte, too, even though Signal Green, dark "Caterpillar" yellow, and Carmine Red are all in the running if I repaint. Lots more places I'd rather throw money first, though!
