Hi,

The problem is that in my country do not exist any qualified mechanic to do this job. Then I contact the father of a friend that was a Porsche Mechanic in Florida to do the job, they told me that he don´t need the tool to the job. He came and take off the head and we change the gaskets, and repair the mixing (oilcooler), etc.
I bought everypart to the the job. But !, the house that solds me the parts sent me the wrong oil seals (turbo), then we can´t finish the job !. 2 weeks ago came to me the correct kit but in this moment the mechanic is traveling and he will return to México until 3 months.
I don´t want to wait 3 months more !
Please help me to do it by myself this job.
I need to install the oil seals, the new pulleys and the belts.
I don´t have the tool and I can´t rent this.
I know that some of you already change the belts without the tool.
I need to know the position of the shafts, etc.
I have a digital camera, then I can post everyday the process.
I have the hayne smanual but don´t says anyhing about this.
Let me know
Regards
Eduardo

Eduardo,

You won't need the tool (p9201) until the end.....but in your case you may have to try and find a better way to retension the belts.....

The cheapest solution may be the krikit tool or you can just go by feel, but that is tricky unless you know what you are feeling for.

I see you have the front end completely disassembled, so you are half way their.

You mention you have the seals, and the belts? Did you get a new waterpump as well?

Well where do you want to start.....pick seal and lets go from there.......

Indeed. Balance shaft seals are the easiest, do those first. Be carefull the top and bottom seals are a different size and many kits do not contain the correct seals. The upper is smaller than the lower. When I get home I will get the exact dimensions for you. I also have the front end of mine torn out right now to replace the water pump so we can do this together. When you get to the CAM belt I will help you tension it without the use of tools. It can be done. And in your situation it may be the only solution.

You don't need that Porsche tool to do the belts. Just do them and tension them and if they are to tight then they make a whinning noise.

That is good advice! Twist the loaded side 90 deg, That is about the right tension. Like the above post states, if it whines back it off a bit. My auto tensioner on my 87 whines at full extention, so I back it off a bit.

Procedure for the front main:

Remove the woodruff key in the front shaft. (A pair of pliers works well for this.)

Slide the retaining washer off the shaft.

Carefully slide the oil pump drive gear out of the oil pump housing.

Lubricate the seal inner lip and exterior ring.

Insert the oil pump drive gear into the seal.

Slide the seal and drive gear back on to the shaft.

Align the oil pump gear back into the oil pump housing.

Press the seal into the block using a seal driver or a wood block, be careful as the seal is a tight fit and can become bent.

Balance shaft seal sizes:

Sorry for the delay I have been working long hours here they are:

Upper= 30x47
Lower= 30x48

Check them, I have ordered kits for people that have had the same size balance shaft seals in them. If one is not bigger than the other, they will leak!

Also, same procedure on the balance shafts, reomve the woodruff keys and slide the inserts out and apply the seal to the insert the install the insert.

TDC marks

are on the camshaft sprocket.............

and on the flywheel. On the back of the engine next to the firewall you will see a small window and you will see the flywheel.... the marking should be -TO- <--- something like that...

You will also have another marking (a notch) at the bottom of the flywheel, and you can see that from underneath.

Good luck

Ok, The plastic cover already installed, the problem was that I have damaged the screw in one of the holes, already repair it.

WHAT I NEED TO DO NEXT ?

BALANCE SHAFTS SPROCKETS

When I turn the shafts always return to the same position with the woodruf key to the top. Do I need to install the sprockets with the heys in this direction and the sprocket aligned with the plastic cover marks ?
If yes I will need to rotate a little to the left the shaft.

UPPER BALANCE SHAFT

1. Woodruff key groove of the balance shaft faces up

2. Push drive gear with groove code "o" on woodruff key

3. Notch in gear will align with the cover

4. Install bolt, washer and collar

5. Align collar so that the "o" and "u" can be seen in the holes

LOWER

* Same as above but drive gear only has a "U" on it that faces up when installed on the woodruff key.

Coat threads with locktite and torque to 45NM.

Hope this helps its right out of the factory service manual.
