Looks to me like the original seal almost was a thin black RTV. If you resealed cleanly with that it would look almost stock.

I resealed my rear lights a few years ago. I bought a 3M product that is used for windshields. It remains plyable which is something I was after. It came in a rectangular cord. I removed the old stuff, made sure each suface was clean and applied the product. No problems!

+1 this is the product to use for taillights. It's also good for the blower motor in the engine bay. The factory equivalent is made by Wurth and is 3x the price and as far as I can see exactly like the 3M product.

It not like silicon, it's a very tacky rubber that dries to a hard but still flexible finish and seals real well. Wear gloves, it likes to bond to skin.
