I finally got the ozone generator and let it run over night. The smell was after that a quite like in swimming bath, a little nuance of chlorine... but the ozone didn't get to air vents and when my 924 got warmer and got blow warm air from vents the smell got back alittle..

I think the smell is minimal too because here is -5 to -15 degrees celsius

I have been told to slice a red onion and put it in the car the bacteria ( mold ) will be absorbed by the onion and the onion will turn black. Continue to do this and you will notice the length of time increasing that the onion turns black and the mold smell will dissipate. Cheap and organic way to rid yourself of that type of smell

But then your car smells like onion, no?

Won't your car end up smelling like vodka? If you get pulled over and the cop smells it you're gunna be in trouble.

Sounds more like Russian Cleaning, you'd think French Cleaning would be wine or champagne. lol

But I would have to agree, you would be best to let the car sit for a while to let the vodka smell air out.

If it was me...shampoo the hell out of it, then air it out till completely dry, then shampoo the hell out of it again. If that doesn't kill the smell, it's probalby under the carpet (in the fibers), and at that point...I'd say rip out and replace.

When I bought my 83 last year about this time it had sat out for a month in heavy rains and had water sloshing around in the rear wheel wells and what turned out to be on the rear seat as well. I had to remove all the carpet and the rear seat cushions down to the metal and I laid them out in front of my wood burner one at a time for several days to evaporate all the water. I didn't use any sprays or chemicals on the seats, but they were physically heavy with water from the rain, I put the carpet and seats back in about a month later and drove it for 6 months and never smelled that musty moldy smell again even when hot in the summer.

It would be a temporary smell and dissipate within a few days more so if you move the air through it

I bought a leather parking brake cover from our sponsor and it was mildew smelling when I got it. I used vinegar and water. I live(d) in sunny southern california USA, I got plenty of sunshine on it.

You installed it and let it sit in your hot car?

Here in Finland in summer has about +15 to +30 degrees celsius outside and when car sits in sunshine the interior heat can climb up 50 to 60 degrees celsius.. and smell only gets worse when heat climbs up..

ooopppssss, where IN SoCal....I'm 20 miles south of LA (sorta between LA and Snott's Berry Farm).

I have a portable room de-humidifier. I've had a couple of cars that got wet inside due to bad seals or whatever, to the point where the carpets were saturated. I put the humidifier on the front seat and turned it on full blast with all the windows up and doors closed. COMPLETELY dried it out and no smell.

Does anyone have suggestions for what to do if the smell seems to be in the vents/heating/AC system? My wife complains about the "old car smell" my car has, and I think that it is not the carpets because the smell seems strongest near the dashboard rather than the carpets (I may be losing it, but I have crouched down from outside the car to sniff the carpets in my car haha).

Well..

I have tried to use vinegar and blow the vinegar fumes thru the vents from outside wheres the fan is. I used about 2 liters a vinegar in a pan and put it near the fan and put the wires to fan directly to battery, so the fan would blow until the battery is dead.

But even the vinegar would smell inside the car after that, it did not helped my car, so when the heat is blowing thru to vents the smell is back..

I would have to test the ozone generator someday. It did not come with the box, so I put it to computer psu box with a fan. And it would not fit currently under the 924 hood near the fan.
