Temp/Fuel Gauge

Anyone ever replace their temp/fuel gauge? If so any advice or tips would be appreciated. I've had the gauge cluster out a couple of times so that's no problem. I bought a used gauge on Ebay and it's missing the football shaped piece from the back of the temp gauge. Can this be swapped from the original? Also does the 87 Turbo gauge have the oil level warning light?
Thanks much.

I've done it, I think it took me all of 20 minutes start to finish. Pretty self explanatory. Good luck.

I would love to know how you got the gauges out.

I have a 1989 944S2 - and the temperature gauge has stopped working. Also, my dash light bulbs are so dim that I cannot see the dash at night.

How do you take out the cluster? I don't want to mess with the steering wheel and air bag.

AFAIK you have to remove both to access the cluster.

The steering wheel isn't hard at all. No idea on airbags

I found it on the site:

for cars with air bags:
The air bag can be removed after the battery has been disconnected for at least 30 minutes.
On the back side of the steering wheel there are two Torx head screws which are recessed into the back of the column. Using a T30 Torx socket and ratchet, remove the screws.
Slide the air bag assembly off of the front of the steering column and disconnect the plug on the back of the air bag. Set the air bag aside where it can not get damaged (face up).
Using a 15/16" (or 24 mm) socket and ratchet, remove the steering wheel retaining nut and the washer behind the nut.
Using a paint pen, finger nail polish, or other appropriate marker, mark the orientation of the steering wheel to the splines on the end of the steering column shaft.
Pull the steering wheel straight off the end of the steering column.

Clark' Garage is the place to go for cluster removal instructions. As far as the air bag goes I was able to remove the air bag from the steering wheel without actually unplugging it. There was enough slack in the wire to let me take the steering wheel off and get the cluster out. I recently did a refurb on the cluster light reflectors using adhesive backed chrome sign maker's vinyl. The old reflective finish can be removed with Non-acetone fingernail polish remover. I'll post some pictures first chance I get.
