How much play should the steering rack have?
I'm guessing none or not much at all. I'm working on a friend's '86, and it's got at least an 1/8" side to side play, and the tie rod ends are tight (inner and outer). I don't remember my '84 having that much play at all. I guess I could jack it up and find out, but that requires work, and I'm already up to my ears in that. Is it shot?

Is the body of the rack moving, or is the 1/8 play in the steering wheel/ column?

The play is between the rack and the pinion gear. With the steering wheel/column locked in place I can move the wheels about an 1/8" or so side to side.

Use the centering bolt to lock the rack. Then try the wheel again, if it still moves it's your tie-rod ends, if it doesnt move try your steering wheel, if that moves its either your rack or intermediate shaft.
IMO 1/8 is a lot, it's likely your intermediate shaft, the racks are quite bullet proof. |
