Temperamental Drivers Window
So a few weeks ago the drivers window on my 85.5, 944 stop working. It wasn't until a week later that it started working like nothing happened. Now it's back to not budging.
Anyone know what could be causing this? |

If it's only 1 window I'd say it's the switch. Take it apart carefully so the little balls don't go flying, sand off the corrosion of all the parts and put it back together. A good trick is to use a piece of scotch tape over the balls. You lick the tape once or twice to make it less sticky. That way you can just pull it out before clicking the two halves of the switch back together and the balls don't fall out when you turn it upside down. I know it sounds weird but it works like a charm.
See clarks garage for the rest of the how-to. |

Sounds like the switch to me. I fixed two of my switches by taking them apart and removing the corrosion with a pencil eraser. To be honest I'd just get new switches if you have original ones, they'll be a lot smoother feeling.

Oh man...What now?

I used s spot of grease to hold the BB in place, helps to lube it too...

Clean up all your grounds, many of the electrical issues in these cars are related to corroded grounds. I like to take the bolt out, clean it off, sand all the tabs to fresh copper and then sand the chassis down to clean metal around where the bolt goes. I would also clean all the contacts on the switch. It may be worth it to pull the switch and bench test it. Some contact cleaner is also in order.
Regards Dave

Seriously though, all you need to clean the contacts is an eraser. Old electrician mate's trick.

Switch the switches to see if the passenger switch works better on the driver's window.
If not, then troubleshoot the motor. Licked scotch tape worked like a charm.

I've already tried cleaning the switch and trying the drivers switch in the passenger slot. That is not the problem as the drivers switch moves the passenger window.
Which grounds would I clean? Where are they located? Thanks everyone for your responses. It was 93 degrees yesterday and I have no AC so having my window work is a must. |

I would guess that both switched in the drivers door have the same ground. Sounds like the issue could be the motor.

If it's the motor then why would it sometimes work and sometimes not? Wouldn't it just not work at all?

Motors have contacts (brushes) in them that can wear out or get corroded.

It was replaced oem 12 years ago. I will clean its contacts/brushes but fully expect to have to replace next year.

An important factor in wear of these parts is mechanical resistance. You need to keep the guide rails and rollers clean and lubed, if the motor has to work against a lot of resistance the brushes are 'eaten away'. If you replace the motor make sure the window it operates is running smoothly or you'll cut your motor's life in half.
