Pilot bearing removal- BREAD

doing a clutch job, and seems that some folks enjoyed this method of removal(Lets get ready to CLUTCH ruummbbbllleee!) and was having trouble removing the pilot bearing. I tried prying with a flathead after removing my RMS- waste of time, rented a slide hammer from PepBoys- way too big by about 8", made a homemade slide hammer out of a long full threaded bolt, 2 nuts, a washer, and a socket, and filed down the hex end of the bolt so it would fit inside the bearing, because I heard this worked for many others, but not me. Next day I made a sandwhich and took the 2 end pieces of the loaf of bread and went down to work on the bearing. This method is just like the grease hydronic method, but not as messy, cheaper, and just as effective if not better. Other tools are a 3/8" socket extension and my 5 lbs. mallet, and the 2 end pieces of bread. Took some bread and started stuffing it behind the bearing untill I couldn't push anymore in. Put my extension in the bearing and hammer it untill I couldn't anymore. Repeated this process about 5-6 times untill the bread pushed the bearing out!

Very cool.

Just another suggestion repeating the warning HondaDustR mentioned about the RMS....

Make sure you clean all the burrs on the engine block RMS especially the indent. It looks very chewed up. If you do not you will rip the new seal and it will leak.

Now THAT is probably the funniest (and most useful) car/mechanical thing I've seen in over 35 years of shadetree mechanicing.

1st Place award!!

I think we need to start a group buy for Wonder Bread.

Great idea, that's right up there with stuffing clothes line rope thru a sparkplug hole into a cylinder that has a stuck valve and turning engine over by hand to push stuck valve closed. Pull rope from cylinder replace plug and go. Add some Seafoam to gas and oil and hope it doesn't happen again.

Is mayonnaise necessary or do you recommend a light coating of Nutella?
