Hail Damage and Insurance Problem
Just wondering your thoughts.
A while back I had hail hit my car. There were minor dents on the roof, hood, etc. I took it into the shop, and they had their local PDR company fix the dents. Everything but the roof came out easy, but because of the headliner being glued in, they had to "glue-pull" the few dents on the roof. The glue-pulls pulled off some of the clear coat in the process. Now the insurance company wants me to file a separate claim for "additional damage". I have to pay two deductibles to fix ONE hailstorm?! Granted the repair to the roof paint probably won't cost my full deductible, but I'm already paying one deductible. Shouldn't I get the car back in the same condition I had it before the hail? It has been 2 months, and I'm starting to get irritated. If this is how insurance works now, then we are all in deep %#$&. What do I do? Johnny ![]()

I wouldn't pay twice. Do they want you to do a seperate claim because they feel the shop damaged the car? Was the shop an approved shop by the insurance company? Do you have a insurance agent you can see in person, or have you been doing this over the phone? Who is your insurance company?

Yeah, they want to do two claims. I am not sure if it is approved, but I always go to the same place when someone hits my car (this is my first claim, ever and I have been paying for 7 years). I have been doing this through the phone with geico. I've had problems in the past of them not paying for damage I felt like they should have to pay for. At this point I could have opened my own bodyshop and done it myself in less time than it's taken these clowns to grant money for my body shop to do it. I might end up paying for the paint on the roof out of pocket, unless it's $1000

I have never had to deal with Geico, but a couple of people that I know have and this seems to be their standard practice. Always right there to take your money for a payment but not so quick to pay out on claims. but at the same time the same could be said other insurance companies as well. If the insurance company wants you to file a claim for additional damage, aren't they saying that the damage occured at the body shop? If that is the case, then the body shop should have insurance to take care of that and it should not have anything to do with you filing another claim. If all else fails, before I would pay anything else, I would call your state office that regulates insurance companies and speak to one of them. You will have to have everything documented as to who said what etc. but here in Wisconsin, the last people that the insurance company wants to hear from is the state regulatory office. Good luck.

Don't pay twice. Either your insurance company or the body shop should/will end up on the hook for their damage. My $0.02 Geico kinda sucks.

I had the body shop cancel the second claim that I didn't want to file in the first place. I said I didn't want to file another claim but he proceeded to anyways. Do these people understand anything about anything? It looks they will pay $40 to patch the paint. Oh yeah that won't be noticeable at all ON THE ROOF! I should hear back later this afternoon after the adjuster comes back. Maybe the PDR place is trying to evade responsibility by saying it was hail that caused it. The body shop said it would probably be about $500 to respray and blend the roof and sunroof.

Yeah after you're done with this, you might want to drop geico.

I had my truck and wife's car crushed by trees and Geico was great. Both were totaled and Geico agent gave me every allowance possible and I was more then satisfied with final payment. They also gave me $600 because Goldie got a little wet cause the sunroof was out and a tree punched thru the garage roof.

Talk with a lawyer. Consultation costs nothing and they will be more willing to settle with you after you give them the name of the lawyer you contacted even without putting one on retainer.

Geico sucks, I've had problems with them before. I finally went with Hagerty Insurance, if your car is at least 20 years old, you can't beat them. Easy to deal with, fast claim payment and no run around, they even cover the mods and upgrades.
$20,000 agreed value on my 88 Turbo S (it gets totaled they hand me a check for $20k), full (and higher/better) coverage than Geico, I can drive the car up to 10,000 miles per year (different mileage packages available) and it only costs me $511 per year. If your baby gets damaged, they even have a service to help you locate parts. Hagerty Insurance - Fueling the collector car hobby through insuring and supporting the classics and get a quote, yes there are some qualifying factors, but the bottom line is they are great to deal with and offer a quality product.

one of the business i own is a body shop . the run of the mill insurance CO's is not what you really want for a old car is it was stated before .
how as for your clam about pating twice for the same damage . this is not the case at all ! the damage from a hail stone is in no way the same as it is from a delam of the clear coat . if and only if your cars clear was in good shape it would not delam . there for your stuck with two claims . in no way at any time with a cars finish should the clear peal off or delam from the base coat . this would be the falt of the repaint or the fack that the clear is just no longer any good . it is not the shops falt nor is it the PDR persons falt but only the falt of the finish of the car . because of the types of cars we work on in my shop we deal most with the specialty car insurance CO's they too would have a hard time not to charge you for the 2nd repair needed . this may not be what you like of think is right but it's the way it is . the simple fact is a cars finish if in good shape will not delam ! the only true fix at this time is to strip off the old finish and repair and refinish the panel . |
