Cam tower installation problem
 

Since my cam tower gasket was leaking, I removed the old gasket and replaced it. However, the installation of the cam tower is now the problem. I have the engine and cam gear on the TDC marks, but when the tower is bolted on and torqued to spec., The cam gear will only turn a few teeth in both directions, then binds up. I realize it take some force to open the valves, but I don't want to break anything. When I removed the cam tower, a couple of lifters fell out, but I believe that they are back in the original holes.

Any suggestions?

Are you sure you are not feeling piston to valve contact? With the timing belt on, assuming you have the timing correct, turn the motor over by hand to verify no interference.

Check proper timing by setting the crank at TDC using the flywheel marks, then verify the cam gear TDC marks line up.

are you trying to turn the cam shaft without the timing belt installed?

That's the problem, I did not install the belt to the crank when I rotated the cam gear so the pistons are in the way. Thank You I am a knucklehead.
