Pentosin PS Fluid?
I came across this thread: 944 Online Forum - The Porsche 944 Forum For The 944 Enthusiast.
Mentions using Pentosin hydraulic fluid, instead of ATF/Dexron III ![]()

It's spec'd on the later cars, my 996 uses it and NAPA stocks it, oh and it's expensive. I don't know if it is compatible on 944's, it's not specified by Porsche for early cars just for later 99+ ZF racks. Might be ZF changed the ps seals on the later cars so that Pentosin is ok. It's something only ZF would know I suppose. Need more research.

I saw that post also and did a little more research. It appears that the reason why Porsche changed to using the Pentosin PS fluid was that ZF determined that the ATF was the major cause for seal failures. There have many that have changed from Dexron to Pentosin and have report no issues whatsoever.

NAPA down the road has Pentosin products, maybe it'll be a good idea to switch whenever I need to overhaul the system

No need to go out of your way to get it, IMHO. I run into ads for that stuff in all the Bimmer catalogs as well. A decent spec ATF picked up at the local Pep Boys will do the job just fine.

I'm using generic store brand O'Reilly's ATF - Dexron III spec

Use either the CHF 202 (used by Porsche from 2006 on) $16.99 per liter, or the CHF 11S (used by Porsche from 1990 to 2005) $21.99 per liter. These are hydraulic fluids made for especially power steering, load leveling systems, etc.
Pentosin ATF-1 is not recommended for power steering systems. Pentosin also recommends flushing the power steering system prior to using either of these products...these are synthetic oil based products, and will not function to full capability if mixed with fossil oil based fluids.
