Question 944 clutch 'sticky'

Hi all,

does anyone have any experience of, or know how to fix, a sticking clutch pedal on a 944. The problem only occurs when the car has waormed up. The pedal goes down to the floor and comes back up again, only to get stuck half way so you have to flick it back up with your foot. Please note, this does not impede the use of the clutch as even in the mid-position you can still drive/change gear.

The car is a 1984 (old dash) 944 NA.

can anyone help?

Time for a new clutch master cylinder and slave cylinder. Chances are that only one is actually bad... but usually the other isn't too far behind if the one goes. here's a link that gets into more detail...

Thanks Bob.

I will look into getting it sorted out. Is this usually an expensive/difficult job or could a DIY mechanic do it?

The parts are not expensive and are available at many parts suppliers. Just need the master and slave cylinders and some brake fluid. The link above shows how to do the mastercylinder. The slave is very easy, all you have to do is remove the starter to access the slave, use a flair wrench to remove the hydraulic line, then unbolt the slave. The hardest part was bleeding the system for me, took a couple days, alot of frustration and cussing... but it eventually started pumping. A brake bleeder seems to lower the level a frustration, but I've seen comments from others where using one did not go smoothly either.
