Fan balance

Yesterday I noticed as soon as my fans kicked on there seemed to be a significant vibration. I remember when I upgraded to 6 blade fans there were some kind of weights for balancing. Anyone ever tried balancing their fans? If so what is the procedure you used. Thanks

First check the fan blades for any imperfections like being bent, missing blade, chunk missing from blade, loose mounting bolt(s)....I believe this is where you will find the vibration. I don't know of any counter weights to balence a fan like you would a car wheel.

i have some unbalanced fans, but they are more fun to drink with, so i keep them around.

seriously, the fan shroud can cause this too. if it is not the right spacing from the blades, it creates a buffeting resistance that results in an oscillation.

Check the fan blades and see if one or more of the little clips on weights has come off. I have seen on the rare occasion that the weight has either slipped from it's original position or come completely off.

If they are the original fans or fans that have been used for a few years, you should be able to see the original position of the weights.

cKelly78z, yes they do need to balance some of the fans...but I know of no replacement weights for the fans. They clip over the edge of the fan blade, sort of like a paper clip, but square.
