Noise from the rear

Hope you all had a fabulous Christmas.

For a little while now there has been a knocking noise from the rear. There is also considerable lash.

During acceleration there is a knocking that sounds as though it is coming from the right rear. It is in all gears and seems to quiet or go away at higher RPM's. Now, on the flip side, decelerating there is a physical bucking and of course a knock associated with the bucking.

From everything I have read it could be everything from the rubber clutch disk to ring and pinion, CV joint, shock mount bolt torque, etc.

We raised the car to check some things and made a video of the sound.

944 Transaxle Noise - YouTube

If you watch that video you will notice that spinning one wheel does not cause the other to spin. Which I seem to recall (deppending on the transmission type) if you spin one wheel the other spins either with or opposite direction.

You will also notice the knock and play. Something is not right I think =)

Any Ideas?

chunk--chunk--chunk--chunk....

Lots of slop when the transaxle coupler is shown.

If you have never changed the rubber clutch disc-------------

Conclusion:

Your clutch disc is hitting the steel tabs AKA--the "make it home tabs"

You also need to get the CVs repacked---nasty buildup.

1. Take out the starter and poke your finger in the hole. If you find any chunks of rubber the clutch disc is shot.

Well that sounds a lot better than a transaxle issue.

I was concerned that the other wheel wasn't spinning, but thinking about it the car was in neutral when that was filmed.

Thank you.

John, I don't know why they call those "limp mode/make it home" tabs....when the rubber center clutch failed in my 89NA, the damn thing left me completely stranded. lol

Phil,

VirginiaF1 may have the name of the Sachs tech to answer your question.
Sounds like a very friendly guy at Sachs.
There was a post about the tabs--lost by me--and another member insisted they are not limp home tabs but had another function. What he meant I cannot remember.

That car is long gone now, and I don't think I really want to try a rubber center in the turbo. lol

You be safe on New Years too...me, I put the car in the garage by 5pm New Years Eve, and won't pull it out again until New Years morning for our traditional New Years Day Canyon run.

Hi all..
Clutch still chuggin' along smooth as silk.
Now 256k and only 26mm wear into the 34mm port window. (~50% worn)
Sachs guy did not indicate the IM-possibility of it being the original clutch but oxidation of the rubber-center must surely have occured since 12/87 build date... ya?

To OP, great illustrative video...
I do believe I can still hear those "chunk-chunk-chunk-chunks" ad infinitem still rattling in my head. Let us known your findings on the tabs.

Going to take out the starter today and look for rubber chunks.

The sound is comming from the right rear (while driving). A buddy of mine was saying he thinks it a CV joint. He said if it were the clutch tabs knocking the sound would be more noticable in the front at the clutch area.

He also said the tabs purpose was to eliminte damage to the rubber on the clutch from excessive torque during take-offs... Not sure the validity of that claim.

The passengers side cv axle is definately shot. There is a lot of play.

I put jack stands under it and let it idle in first gear and the noise is apparent, outer cv joint.
Picture the wheel as a clock.... The wheel can be turned one hour before the cv even engages.

I started taking the axle out, but one of the torx bolts stripped and I walked away. I will takle it soon and will spend a lot of time on each bolt, cleaning, and waking up the bolts. Will also let the garage warm up =). Was below freezing yesterday.
