New Tire Question
Hey Guys/Gals,
Just had new tires put on. Was working on something else so removed the wheels and brought them in to get the tires installed. Upon getting them back I noticed that they will not stand up on thier own. I thought it was odd as every new tire I have had experience with will stand up on their own. I thought perhaps they were over inflated, but nope, 32psi. They fall over to the outside of the wheel, in fact they wont fall over to the inside of the wheel unless you bring them to just over 45 degrees leaning towards the inside. Not sure if I am explaining that well enough?... Are the tires defective? I bought Falken 215, 60, 15's

Don't they have to be balanced?

They were balanced...
And then still, balancing is for the verticle plane, this is more a horizontal thing as one side is seemingly higher than the other. Like the width of the tire is not flat (0 degrees all the way across)... Normal.... ______ | | | | | | | | | | ----------- These seem more like the inside of the wheel is taller the the outside, can't tell visually. It seems like if I put these on the insides of the tread would wear very fast.

OK, so my ansi art didn't come out as intended I think the spaces where removed but I think you get the idea.... Any new tire or any tire for the matter is like a rectangle when looked at tread on.

You have a large offset on your wheels for the later cars, probably just more weight on the outside edge of the tire than the inside.

Hadn't considered that... Though my Z3 star wheels have a large offset as well and they stand on thier own when removed from the car.

Lay a straight edge on top of the tire?

Haven't tried that yet, will check it out tomorrow.
So far .... VIP Auto... They didn't have the right size in stock after stating they did so they took $20 per tire off, so thats a plus. 2 Wheels came back missing the center caps.... UGH ... they will hear from me tomorrow! When the pulled the valve stems they put a gouge in one of the weels ... UGH And then this .... So you could say im not very happy atm....

If you think one edge of the tire is taller than the other, take a piece of string and wrap all the way around the tread circumference on one side and then measure the string. Do the same thing to the other edge of the tread and compare the two measurments, they shoud match or be within an eigth of an inch....no more than that.

Gawernator so you think something is not right?
I am not a tire 'EXPERT' but I have never in my life (other than a bicycle tire) seen one not stand on thier own. Motorcycle tire I could understand as they are rounded in nature.... wheras passenger, truck, etc are retangular.

Well I'm no tire expert. I'd be more upset about the wheel centers and damage they did! However I agree all of the car tires I've seen or used stand up straight

Granted and they will hear from me tomorrow regarding those issues.... but I am confused on the tires falling over as I can only go by personal experience.

With all due respect, this has to be one of the silliest threads I've ever seen.
To recap, you're worried that, let me see if I got this right, that you're tires tip over when you have them off the car? Really? I went back and checked and the OP date wasn't April 1 so that's not it. I think this is right up there with blinker fluid. |

Yea Emoore924, that's exactly what I was thinking, but I was just trying to offer up some ideas rather than stomp my feet saying how pissed I would be.
Honestly, I could care less if my tires fall over while the wheels are mounted in them, because I wouldn't stand them up in the first place to prevent the wheels from scratching WHEN they do fall over. |

You could try cementing them to the garage floor.

he's not being a dick. i'll be a dick.
this is really a dumb question. i actually had to read this to realize that a tire/wheel combination was being referred to as just "tires". at first i thought it was a valid question, until i saw that the tires were on the wheels and then said "duh" the tire/wheel falling over is obviously due to the wheel weight being off center. this is pretty much a no brainer, and anybody working on a car should know this, or put away their tools, as they are dangerous weapons in the wrong hands. now, THAT is being a dick. |

See to me, there is no such thing as a stupid or dumb question....
If you don't know something it is better to ask a question or two rather than assume... I'm sorry, I didn't know something expertly so i thought I would pose the question in a reputable place where there are like minded, genuinely good people. Perhaps I am wrong yet again. And, no flash, you are wrong. Off-centered wheels stand up on thier own. The horizontal plane is important for tire wear and ground foot print. Here is a video perhaps explaining my questioning. 20121216 133717 - YouTube Merry Christmas
