HVAC controls and centre console switch Q's

Hi guys,

Just doing some interior work on my car while i have a break in the summer rains. Switched my '86's centre console for my 968 parts car one.

I've found a few unused connectors under my centre console and was wondering what they were for.

This red one:

and these 2 of these black ones with #1 and #4 marked on the loom:

and this switch is from a 968, i assume it adjusts the level of the headlight beam?

Is there a blank available for it?I'm just using it to plug the hole.

im switching out my HVAC controls, the plastic screw holes for my old ones have gone brittle and cracked or broken. the new one is stillooking good but is showing signs of a few cracks. i'm thinking of reinforcing them with duct tape to help protect them. Any ideas for anything else i could do for long term?

And does anyone have a spare defroster switch i can use for it?

Summer time? It's almost like you're on the other side of the equator or something.

Hmm, based on the picture that looks like it adjust the level of the fog lights. That's pretty cool. Unfortunately that will be of no use on the 944.

excellent thanks. will hold out hope theres a blank for it. The housing on the underside is bigger than for the other switches so a normal switch blank doesn't work because it doesn't clip into anything.

I'm just guessing here but the red connector migth be off the air bag in the steering. The six pins black connector will also be from the air bag to brain ,look for the male connector that goes with it which will be underneath the glove boxe. The dimer switch I never seen one like this, it must be exclusive to the ROW 968.Our US/CDN cars are different as you can see by the pics.Red -instruments control level----Yellow fog ligth level switch ----White turn signal-head ligths dimer & Flasher.#2 pic__From left to rigth --sunroof/rear wiper/central LS/mirrors & two blank switchs.Btw what the purpose of the switch in the console with a little square in it?

Thanks Ernie, I don't think its airbags, my cars an '86 and has no passenger or driver side airbags, both physically and in all the factory docs and options.

that switch is faded, its the rear wiper.

My '86 has aftermarket A/C and aftermarket central locking but my 968 has those options so I may move those across. The rest of the controls you've circled is the same as my '86.

I think he IS on the other side of the 'quator!

Red plug is strange never seen it. While I first assumed wince it was red it was aftermarket, but upon closer inspection it looks like a stock connector (proper pin layout and alignment slot). Looks similar to the clock plug.

Fog light adjustment knobs? I've never heard of such wizardry!

IIRC the blank for the far right slot in the console clips in differently than the others (the receiver for it is bigger for dial switches). Have to take it out and look though - see if one of the other blanks fits in that hole.

For the clear molding - maybe reinforce it with some JB-Weld (epoxy). You could JB weld a thin sheet of plastic (or even aluminum or steel - if you want it really strong!) onto the back, drilling holes for the screws. I think in the back there are protrusions with about twice the diameter of the hole - likely for strength. So you would need to cut these big holes out of the material. Or just use strips as needed.

Happy New Years!
