Hope someone has a answer to my question.I have a 84 944 5-speed & needing a starter. Will a late model 85.5 & up starter interchange with the early build 944? thanks K.C. Steve |

Yes, the PET for early and late is identical 951 604 101 00 or SR39X on a rebuilt.
FYI, Pelican makes it easy to check ... Pelican Parts Porsche Parts Diagrams and Locator Another FYI, if going used get a "Remanufactured" starter. GL J_AZ

They will interchange, but there are two different styles. The newer ones are actually smaller, lighter, and a little more powerful.
Old style (bigger one) New Style |

So, my '87 (late model, right?) has an older model starter in it? That seems kinda weird...

I don't know when they changed, but my '87 has the newer one and my '84 had the older style on it, until it went out and I replaced it with a newer style reman.

They are interchanagble, just be aware the smaller new style starter can cause what is known as starter kickback. The smaller starter puts out a larger EMF and can cause the reference sensor to be falsely triggered. This causes the engine to fire at the wrong time. This is solved by using the late style speed and reference sensor bracket with an EMF shield.
