951 fixer upper?

I definitely do not want a turbo... I do... I don't... I'm not schizophrenic he is... no he is...

Another one of my dream cars has become available (an 89 turbo), with the usual complications.
It is out of state (tack on a few hundred for air fare or have the car transported)
The body has a few minor dings (quality bodyshop, tack on a thousand or so)
At the very least the driver leather seat needs to be redone (around $300 in my area)

And there are some screw holes in the hump between the driver and passenger seats

looks like maybe it was a car phone, is that a major no no? drilling holes in the tunnel like that? Is fixing that carpet a big hassle?

Presuming the car is in good running order (PPI) how much should I add to the price for the restoration?

I figure around five grand for new paint and interior which when added to the price is not bad for a 89 turbo... if I can do it for that.

Oh yeah, I guess the question is has anyone done a full cosmetic restoration and what did it end up costing in the long run?

It seems to me it is like ANYthing else. If you are patient, take some time, you really enjoy doing it, and do all the work yourself you can probably do OK. If you got to have it now, have to have everything brand-new instead of excellent used, and have Gunter do the work for you -- you cannot come out ahead $$.

I can do the work, I enjoy it OK, for me it was worth waiting for a good car -- 'cause like someone said recently -- even then, you're going to be putting a few grand into to bring it up to snuff during the first year or two!

Thanks Kenny, your absolutely right.

I looked closer at the pictures the guy sent me and have exchanged a few emails with him.
Let's just say my 84 is in better condition...
and oh yeah like I have the extra time/money to do a full restore, I crack myself up!
Anyone want to take a look at my 1975 750cc Triumph that has been sitting in the garage for ten years?
A 89 turbo for $10K, what was I thinking! Also as has been said here many times if the owner let the body and interior go to heck what makes you think he took car of the mechanical.

Took my medication, feeling better now, thanks for talking me down.

BTW there is a nice 87 Bronze 951 for sale here in Cali...

The exterior of my 944 cost me $1500 with the windows, trim emblems, hatch etc. removed...the doors and hood stayed in! plust about $100 for new emblems and stickers

Well done grasshopper: you are learning the ways of the 944...

The care a driver takes on the exterior/interior of a car is directly related to the care and $$ he spends on the mechanical aspects. For $10k, it is better to avoid the risk and the draining of the wallet...

I would agree with Zoltan, I have spent around 1.5K on replacement parts and interior. And to rebuild my body it was around $4900 for a complete tear down, and strip to bear metal. I also had all the door dings pulled and a dent in the rear cut out and replaced. But the mechanical condition directly correlated with the body condition.
