Ack

It can take just a few seconds to spoil your day. I bottomed out a tap for the torsion tube end plate mount. I have had much succes with a punch trying to break in pieces. It's tight quarters in there. Anyone else done this? Any tips?(one of the two bolts into the body)

if all else fails, you can call a shop with a portable EDM to come out and burn it out

if you have a shop like this guy near by, you can give them a call

Buy a tap removal tool Remove Broken Taps with Walton Tap Extractors

McMaster-Carr complete sets or individual extractors, inexpensive and a true time saver, every good tool box should have a set.

Picking up one of these is the plan. Along with a lot of extra fingers. I'm hoping I'll have room for it without removing the torsion tube, I'll find out Tuesday.

The complete set from 4.5mm to 12.5mm is only $85.83 (includes the plastic kit box), easy to use.

I found out about these about a year ago, busted a tap in a head, took the head to my friend Tony Callas (Callas Rennsport), and within 5 minutes, they had the tap out...and that 5 minutes included the time to walk from the office to the far end of the shop....maybe 2 minutes to actually pull the tap out.

Needless to say, I stopped at McMaster-Carr on my way home and picked up a set.

I never knew something like that existed! Very excited to order one. Found a video of someone using it on a snowmobile crankcase http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aEnxftef31Y

Ever priced having someone come out and remove a broken tap? Cheapest I was quoted for removing the broken tap in the head (before I called Tony and found out about these extractors) was $175, and that's if I took the head to them...so, that makes $85 cheap....you can buy a single extractor for $13.84, or the complete set of 6.

Its out. Original plan of going to a local tool and die store didn't pan out last week, was too busy to drive anywhere, so I used McMaster Car. I first tried using it with the suspension still in place, there was a fragment that wouldn't move/break out with any force or direction of force I could apply with suspension in place, so with 3 prongs, ended up just bending prongs.

Removed suspension, and dropped torsion tube yesterday, and with the extra room was able to break out the wedged piece, and then pull it with the extractor. Its out, yay!

I noticed my spring plate to control arm bolts have smashed threads. Haven't been able to locate a source for new ones. I'll see what the 944 mechanic at Hendrick Porsche has to say, and go from there. This car has one delay after another to get it on the road. I'll be glad to finally drive it!
