Bypassing '89 S2 Alarm

Hi guys,

Crossposted this elsewhere but figured having it on more than one forum can't hurt. I'm having some trouble with the alarm in my '89 S2 and need help bypassing it. The Clarks (and elsewhere on these forums) instructions for this procedure are WRONG. This is what happens when you jumper pins 1&4 on the '89 S2 alarm module:

That is (err, was) about 10" of the wire for pin 4. I peeled it back until I didn't see any more melty goodness and cut it out.

For reference, this is the alarm module, the 928.637.104.05:

Which pins (or set of pins) are supposed to be jumpered to disable the alarm? I've found one reference to pins 1&3. Nothing says anything (that I can see) about pins 7&8.

Seems to be a different module than the one described in Clarks Garage. Perhaps that is why the directions in Clarks Garage don't work for your car.

Upon further search, found this in the 944online forum...

we have this update for the 928 637 104 05 relay
used on some 88 cars and from 89 and later

In the interests of protecting people like myself whom blindly follow directions without checking first.... (My fault, I'm proud to admit)<br>Could you please add a line to the 944 faq that if you wish to bypass the later factory alarm(928 637 104 05), the jumpers you need are pin 1 and 3, not 1 and 4 as per your instruction.... If I had made a closer inspection I would have realized that the 928 alarm has swapped the 87a and 31 terminals, and pins 1 and 4 in the later 928 alarm simply short power to ground once you turn on the ignition... Makes a bit of smoke before the fuse kicks in )

George, Thanks.

That's pretty much what I found (after I tried and failed the bypass). Oops.

Reason behind bypass is the alternator isn't charging - have used two different alternators, 3 different (2 new) voltage regulators. The current combination benchtested OK at the local auto parts store. Several threads I've read here and elsewhere have pointed at the alarm being hooked into the D+ circuit (pin 8 on the alarm control unit) and this seemed like an easy (ha!) troubleshooting step before I start pulling my hair out.

Other posts have indicated there need to be two jumpers, one to trigger the DME (1&3) in my case. Anybody know as to whether 7&8 do need to be jumped on this model? I'm assuming yes but obviously 1&4 wasn't right, so hoping someone's done this before...

Hello guys!

I am the owner of a 944 S2, and I had precisly the same trouble.
So, I have two questions now!

1. After trying to pin 1 and 4, and seeing some smoke in my car, I tried to pin just 1 and 3, but nothing happened. Impossible to start the car. I don't have any voltage between the pin 1 and the pin 3. Do I need to pin also 7 and 8 ?
2. Do you think any wire could be melt ? I tried to follow the Black and White pin 1, but it's quite impossible ... Where is he supposed to go ?

I tried to put 12V on the pin 3 and the engine started. So I assume that pin 1 have to give 12V but I don't know why, I have nothing.

Thanks for your help !

Emmett

Problem solved !

This black and white wire goes to the postion "G24" on the fuses and relay box.

The wire was totally melt...

I juste change it, I pined 1 (new wire) and 3 on the alarm, and the car started immediatly!!

I used the procedure from a 1989 Turbo

Here's how to wire past the OEM Alarm on a 1989 951 - Rennlist Discussion Forums

I recently found out that my S2 has jumpers in place of the alarm relay. I'm curious what the problem could of been? I'm tempted to just buy a relay and check but not sure it's worthwhile? How would the alarm function/benefit?
