924 turbo gearbox ident

Looking at buying a 924 turbo gearbox with the LSD diff option. Is there anything on the part number (or any other ID on the cases) stamped on the case that tells me LSD is fitted I know the only sure way is by turning the output shafts but as I'm buying over the net turning the shafts is not an option...

That ^^^ is the wrong gearbox. All ROW 931 had the snailshell gearbox (a.k.a. G31).

To the OP:
As you mention, the only way to know for certain is to test the axle flanges and make sure they turn in the same direction. However, you can check the SERIAL number of the gearbox. This is NOT a casting number on any of the parts. It is a number that is STAMPED into the differential housing on the longitudinal rib that is directly between the two axle flanges, just ahead of the drain plug. If the serial number has a "/12" at the end of the numeric sequence, it should have LSD.

If you need more info on these boxes, I suggest taking a look at my downloads page (Ideola's Garage: Downloads for Transaxle Porsches) where you can pull down the excellent writeup by Pete Tinucci on the G31 and other 924/44 gearboxes.

Your website was great ideola. Now I wonder how common it is to find an lsd /12 box. I wonder roughly how many buyers took up the lsd option in uk/europe / ROW? In the case of the 911 it was very very low. But 924 turbo? Anybody hazard a guess? 5% 20% 30%???

Not sure how many had them, they are difficult to find. I have three at the moment (one in the 941, one in the Club Sport, one going into the D-Prod). I have a fourth on the way (for the UWB project) and looking for a fifth (to someday fit into the 937).
