dumb ign coil question
 

Entertain my dumbness for a moment. When checking my coil with my mulitmeter, out of my car, on the primary leads there is a break in continuity. As i understand there should be continuity correct? Im getting intermittent starts and stalls while at idle. When the revs get to abt 2.5k the car will not stall, but as soon as the rpms drop to idle, it will run for about 15 seconds then stall out. The (+) primary post spinns around unlike the (-) post which is secure. All signs point to needing a new coil correct?

With a loose positive post your coil is probably bad. Clarks Garage (http://clarks-garage.com/) has a coil check procedure. The resistance check is:

Check the ignition coil primary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the positive (Black wire) and negative (Green wire) terminals on the coil. The resistance should be 0.4 to 0.6 ohms.

Check the ignition coil secondary coil resistance by connecting an ohmmeter between the coil output terminal and the ignition coil negative terminal. The resistance should be 5000 to 7200 ohms

I used the clarks of course and got good readings then no readings then good then bad again. The fluctuations in readings are parallel to continuity readings. So, getting no readings is what led me to check for continuity. Im not 100% on the structure and internal componets of a coil other than what google images provides and those vary quite a bit. Thanks for the info. Its what i thought and knew but just needed assurance.
