I bought my 83 NA for $500 in 2006 (maybe 200K + miles on the body, but a newer engine.). The body looked great but it didn't run - had oil in the coolant (which the PO swore he hadn't noticed). He quit driving it because of a no start condition, which he said, he diagnosed as a bad DME. The PO had been racing the car and the interior was partially stripped.
I had it towed home. The oil in the coolant was a bad oil cooler gasket which I replaced. The no-starting was a bad sensor. I've dumped a ton of money in it since and it runs great. It's my daily driver. My 951 I paid $2,000 for in 2008 (with 172,000 miles). It was also a non-runner. The PO was moving and had to get rid of the car - it'd sat in his car port for several years. The basic problem here was a bad TPS which my son Trav took 15 minutes to diagnose. I've also dumped a ton of money in this car - I've replaced all sorts of stuff, including the engine; but it runs great. The only thing left for both cars is to repaint them, which I may do this coming summer. For me, the critical amount seems to be about $6,000 for 951's. You can find nice, turn-key 951's for around $6,000. Or you can buy cheaper ones but if you do, you can anticipate having to spend at least another few thousand dollars to make it reliable - at least based on my experience. NA's are less expensive. My son and I went together on one that had some bent valves and that project cost less than $2,000. My NA had more problems and took about $5,000 worth of parts in the first year (front and back suspension, tires, clutch, belts and rollers, etc) before it was really reliable and fun to drive.

I bought my DD '84 for $700 back in '02 or so with 119k on it and a blown head gasket. Then the first week I drove it the clutch went out. Even after that I still had less than $1,500 in it because I did all the work myself.

Hmmmm
It sounds like you never actually "buy" a Porsche, you pay to "own" a Porsche with a commitment of never ending repairs, constant need to upgrade, hundreds of $$$ in tools and maintenance only to have the pleasure of ownership that meets your standards of transportation. The purchase price is irrelevant. J_AZ

Paid $1000 with what I believe to be 44k miles was serviced by dealer up to 44k on the carfax report then went to auction and the report jumped to 144k.
Replaced all wheel bearings, oil cooler reseal, clutch, thermostat are the only repairs so far (fingers crossed) |

My first 924S belonged to my guitar teacher as a kid. it stopped running on him and he was so fed up with it he gave it to me. It took me 3 months to get it running. Regards Dave

In 1993 I paid $500 for a 76 914, towed home pulled off the fuel injection and converted to single carb. Bombed around in it for two years with minor maint. I just bought my first 944 an 84 with 99k for $750 not running. Have had it less than 36 hours and it is now a running driving car but I have dropped $500 into today alone.. more than I ever spent on the 914. After a quick survey I now have a punch list that is easily going to be another $1,000 just in parts. Hoping to get the 944 fully sorted and not spend more than it will ever be worth. The 944 is my 6th Porsche , first ever water cooled. Let the journey begin.

![]() My 1983 NA was $2,200, ran, paint was oxidized but looked pretty nice after a professional detailing/my buffing. Still haven't had a no-start with either 944, yet...

I paid 3000 for an 87 n/a with 82k miles on it, and its in good shape and had all records including window sticker,it also had leather, central locking, new alpine stereo with bigger speakers converted to fit in the door panel, design 90 wheels and a performance chip, drove it 2.5 hours home immediately after I bought it and it still runs great ...deal of the century?

HMMM ....looks like 944's are a lot like prostitutes. Cheap initial entry fee but expensive over the long run.

I got my car for free back in the 90's but it needed a motor. Over the years I have sent thousands. 10k - 15K - 20K? I really don't know and I don't want to know. I did race it for many years and that tends to increase the parts bill quite a bit. In motors alone I think I spent 10K. But i don't care I really enjoy driving my car.
Lets face it driving a Porsche is not for the faint of wallet. |

$1800 a few months ago. I've put probably $600 into it so far, and it runs pretty reliably. I'm pleased with it at this point. Before too long, I know the clutch will need to be replaced; I've got a couple oil leaks that need attention; possibly slave/master replacement if my next bleed still doesn't cure the clutch pedal being sucked down...

i won one in a bet. i had a customer who insisted on putting a blown small block ford in a 944, and using it for 1/4 mile work. i told him it was a bad idea, and the car couldn't handle it. he thought he knew better. i bet him he would twist the car, and that if i was wrong, the work was free, but if i was right, i got the car. first launch, the car twisted so bad it stayed on 3 wheels when it came down.
i cut the car up right then and there with a cutting torch and a sawsall, right in front of the owner, and threw the car away. |

$500 off ebay for my 83 944, another $500 in parts got it running great.
Probably just me, but something about fixing stuff on it makes me like it even more afterwards.
