rear axle shaft & hub installation problem
Hi, guys.
I'm probably doing something wrong trying to install rear axle shaft and hub together. In theory, I can place axle shaft from inside of wheel bearing and, on the outside, place hub and screw them together, thus, pressing them into the bearing. Well, in practice, the splines of then barely touch each other and don't engage, no matter how much I turn axle and "feel" that they make contact. Tried to press them together with axle nut, but encountered great force - the splines didn't mesh. I'm I doing it wrong way? Or do I have to try until I run out of my favorite drink? BTW, I didn't use hammer to drive either of them in. ![]() |

The hub needs to be pressed into the bearing using a hub press (since the trailing arm is mounted in the car) first. Support the rear side of the bearing with the proper size bushing. Once the hub is completely installed, then, the stub axle should fit easily into the hub with the splines meshing.
Then, torque the new (always use a new nut, they are one time only) nut down to 500 Nm or 368 lbft. If you reuse that nut, it will back out and may ruin your brand new bearing.
