Crank pic

Many of yall know about that little scratch I got in my crankshaft in September that rendered my engine useless, thought I'd show the pics. The convo went like this:
Dad: "hey you got the crankshaft out...where is it?"
Me: "Over there and over there"

in 35 years of backyard mechanic-ing i've never seen a crank actually break like that - curious about what could cause that

Good God! How fast was your motor spinning when this bomb went off?

The engine had a fresh rebuild 4 years ago. I was told that it was metal fatigue in the crank. I was actually sitting at a stoplight when it broke through. I had been driving back and forth from New Orleans to Mobile, Alabama (2 hours) a lot though I know that didn't cause it. I got lucky that when it broke I was 2 miles from my house. I went to replace the rod bearings and when I pulled off the rod cap (cylinder #3) I saw the crack. I didn't know it broke through but since it was cracked I pulled the engine and bought a NOS crank for only $1,550, a steal for a new crank. Once I pulled the crank out I saw that cylinder #3 was scored which is what I was afraid of. I pretty much dropped everything because my rebuild project was toast. I had wanted to keep that engine because of the gas-flowed head (major porting), the car was a rocket. I'm a senior in college and needed that car back ASAP! I ended up having an engine pulled from a wrecked S2 in Boston and shipped to my house for $2,500. It had 115,000 miles on it. I finished stripping that engine down completely so that I could get it in tubs and move it to make room to drop in the new engine. The new engine barely leaks any oil and seems to pack the same punch as my modified engine up to 60, above 70 I have noticed it doesn't have the same amount of horsepower. I didn't want to swap the heads with the new engine out because I didn't want to mess with the timing or take any chance of messing it up. I plan on rebuilding that other engine eventually. Luckily I have a friend in Mississippi who's really good with 944s, he helped me tremendously! Believe it or not this engine was still running when I took it out, that uneven break (the large tooth) held the two halves together. I have a video of it running when I was trying to diagnose the problem, lots of knocking

Had a friends 944 NA crank break in the same place at the end of a race. He came in and asked, I think I have something in my exhaust system broken. It was running rough and making a big racket.....
