Hey folks,
I'm finishing up belts, water pump etc. Then I ran into a snag. The lower shaft sprocket when tightened is hitting the engine. My parts bin doesn't show a washer for behind. What is happening.(or, what AM I doing wrong.) Also, the sprocket cover now is almost against the roller. Once again, what could I be doing wrong when only putting a bolt in and a nut on a stud! ![]() Thanks, Ed |

you're talking about the lower balance shaft right? - is it touching the engine or the back of the plastic belt covers? - the wires to the oil pressure sender run back there - are they pushing the cover forward? - got any pictures

Thanks for replying so quick. The oil pressure sender wire may have been back there. I dremeled the cover where I saw some rubbing. Gear spun nicely. That is,
until I put the cover plate on it. As I rotate the gear it is hitting the roller above. The eccentric part makes it hit and stop. I now seem to have a more serious challenge. I've been taking the bolt out but after innumerable wrench turns it is not backing out. I can't think how I stripped it cause I hand thread it til tight and then use wrench. Any ideas how to remove the thing?Like I said appreciate the quick response. Ed |

i'm assuming you're talking about the balance shaft idler above the lower balance shaft - try putting a screwdriver behind the balance shaft idler and VERY GENTLY prying it while also trying to remover the bolt - that might get it started enough to come out - that said once you get it out you will have to put a thread insert in it

Removed bolt
Your idea worked. I was going to do it a little different and did. I got leverage at the bottom left of the sprocket and it came out
I'm going to Tap the whole and install new bolt.Question if you are still there! My front crankshaft bearing seal will not move. Tried leverage many ways but no motion. Should I drill the metal in the seal? I'll have to pull fans out to make room for drill. Any other way to remove gasket? Thanks, Ed |

Now is the perfect time and excuse to buy a right angle drill. Always look for any excuse to buy new tools.

if you drill out the hole and tap new threads the new bolt won't fit through the hole in the idler pulley - you need to get a thread insert kit and put the old size threads back in - as for the crankshaft seal i just did this the other day - gently hammer a drywall screw through the middle of the seal - that is halfway between the outer edge and the point where it starts touching the shaft - give the screw a half turn until it bites into the metal of the seal pretty good then pull it out with the claw end of a hammer - like pulling a nail - make sure to also replace the oring behind the washer on the crankshaft - good luck
