Side mirror switch wires
I know this is a lost cause before I ask, but the wires to my side mirror switch in the center console pulled out of the plastic clip. Does ANYONE know which colored wires go to which pins on the switch?
I was just trying to fix something else. I need to learn: every damn time I do anything on this car, I break something else. Incidentally, I've changed my stance from "I love this car ![]()

I'm sure someone knows. I imagine you're talking about the switch to select left/right mirror, not the joystick?
It's only three wires I think, right? Brown, red/blue, and something else I think. But sorry, I don't know which go to what pin and it would be a while until I can check. Take care! |

Yep! That's the switch, and those are the wires in question. I experimented plugging different wires onto different switch posts, but no luck. And I snapped off one of the post accepters. Fml........

Truly awesome help, thanks guys. That gets me about halfway there, esp. with the German wire color codes.
But embarrassingly, I never learned to read wiring diagrams... Stupid Liberal Arts major. As FrenchToast said, there are three wires. But there are six posts on the switch; two top, two middle, two bottom. It's a two-position switch, so I would assume that the ground (brown) would go on one of the two middle posts, and then the other two fellas would connect to posts at opposite ends of the switch? Seems logical. Can someone make sense of the diagram for me? =/

The switch in front of the shift lever right? Two positions...
There should be 6 wires. And each pin is numbered on the plastic housing. I may have been unclear, the numbers in front of the colours of my previous post are pin numbers.

Ohhh nice, gotcha.
Well that is odd then. My mirrors (and by extension, the selector switch) have always worked flawlessly. But I swear I can't find three more loose wires anywhere. That diagram is from an oval dash car, right?

I could tell you what type of submarine you're looking at from a satellite photo miles and miles away but read a wiring diagram? Good luck lol

Yep, late model.... Good luck.
Oh, and I messed up a bit. 6 is ws/bl (white/blue) not (white/black) On my car (86) the wire that is supposed to be black is black with a yellow stripe. ![]() For future reference let's learn some German colours. SW - schwarz (black) WS - weiß (white) BL - blau (blue) BR - braun (brown) GE - gelb (yellow) RT - rot (red) GN - grün (green) I think that's all the different wires we have.

From the 924S wiring diagrams
Changeover switch pin1 Black - goes to driver door mirror motor pin 2 Green - goes to joystick pin 3 Blue - goes to passenger door mirror motor Note - the other side of the motors go to the joystick. So with the joystick in neutral, all three wires are open, neither 12v nor 0v. Move the joystick to one side and two are the same while one is different. The one that is different goes to pin 2. Connect one of the others and see which mirror moves.

... So I just noticed the little "3" sticker on the wire group. The wire group I was trying to jam on there when it broke was marked "2".
I will try the number 3 wire group later. And if it works, perhaps kill myself out of embarrassment...

Ugh, tried wire groups 3 and 4, to no avail.
So it has to be 2, which (my hand on the Bible) only has three leads. One is solid brown, one is red and blue, and one is either red and black or blue and black - I can't remember which. In other words... HOW IS IT DIFFERENT FROM EVERYONE ELSE'S?! And they say Germans have no sense of humor. What's more silly than seriously effing with a young adult's brain 27 years down the road?

So I have confirmation; my three wires are red and blue, red and black, and solid brown. No one knows which wires go to which switch contacts? =/

Frankly my dear....

Hi there..if you have the 3 wires as you mentioned then you are dealing with the rear wiper wiring, not the mirror switch (as mentioned by otheres that switch has 6 wires). I just checked on the circuit diagram and the colours match. So, have you accidently plugged the mirror connector into the rear wiper switch?

As I said yesterday, I guess that's a possibility.. And since my car has the rear wiper delete, I wouldn't see anything happening from wiring up the switch, no matter what combination of connectors to posts.
But then, why isn't my switch working even with the #3 wire group? The electronically-adjusted mirrors were about the only flawlessly working thing on that car. ![]() Unless the car has to be running for the mirrors to adjust? I've only been trying it in acc. mode.

Have you checked the fuse (number 28 @ 7.5A I think...). It could be that one of your wires touched a ground when the switch connector fell apart?

I did not disconnect the cable from either battery lead, so that's a very distinct possibility. :O I'm like my grandpa - to hell with personal safety! Good thinking, I will check that later.

Hey guys, sorry to bring up an old thread again, but my side mirror thing just became an actual problem.
I put back together the center console (plugging wire group #3 into the door mirror selector switch), tied up the wire group that came apart so that it wouldn't ground itself again, and then replaced the fuse (#28, 25A not 7.5) because it did look a bit jank. Now, my mirror motors still don't work, and I've lost my reverse lights (they share a fuse, I think). Confused! Anyone have some ideas? I hate backing up without backup lights. People don't pay attention when they're driving, it's kind of only a matter of time...
