How many miles on that thing?

Honestly, unless it's been done... do everything

Stick your finger in the back side of the balance shaft housing. If you can move the plug.... you need a new o-ring.

Has the head been off before? If not, might as well change the headgasket. It's a perfect opportunity to replace valve stem seals, regrind the valves, reseal the camtower, and check for bad lifters. You probably don't want to hear this, but I was in the same position last year, and had to take it all apart again several times when a new thing popped up.
