Two Orings???

My new thermostat came with two orings and I'm not sure which one to use. One is thicker than the other. Which one do I use on the thermostat? Does the washer use the smaller one? Also, what order do they go in? I assume it's thermostat, washer, then clip, right?

Edit- I have a few more questions: in my front engine seal kit there are packages labeled "left balance shaft" and "right balance shaft"." Which balance shaft is left and right? Also, I can't get my crank gear off. I've soaked it in Kroil oil, tried tapping it with a hammer, and pried on it with a crow bar, but it just won't come off And yes, I have removed the bolt.... My last question is I can't remove the woodruff key for the balance shafts. I tried pulling it out with some vice grips, but they just slip off. I don't want to chew up the key, so I gave up and soaked it in Kroil. Any tips are greatly appreciated.

I will answer the first question about the thermostat gaskets and steel spacer.

There are 2 types of "updated" water pumps for the 944---Original and "New Style"

You have to measure the distance on the WP from the sealing surface to the snap ring to find out which updated WP you have.

Thermostat - General Information, Testing, and Replacement

It will either be 4.5mm or 7.5mm

The steel spacer washer is only used with the "thick" thermostat rubber sealing ring on the 7.5mm gap WP. Clarks refers to as: (New Style updated Water Pump}

NOTE: Each type of updated WP uses a different thermostat.

NOTE: The steel washer is NOT used with the thin, 2.5mm thermostat rubber seal.
The steel washer is only used with the thick thermostat seal. See tech page.

After you get the front gears off....

A quick reply about the front oil pump drive sleeve.

Do you have the seal removed? If not, get it out without damage to the oil pump casing.
HF Harbor Freight has a "rocker style" seal remover tool that Rasta Monsta uses.
Another method is to drill a tiny hole in the seal and screw in a screw. Use the crank shaft as a fulcrum with a claw hammer. Search for different methods to get this seal out.

Then---grab the oil pump sleeve with a pliers and pull.

Van has video on seal replacement that is very good to watch---otherwise the seal will leak.
Torque the front crank bolt to 155 foot pounds---(I have been corrected )

Difference between oil pump sleeves 83/early 84 and later sleeves

Just a few ideas...

Thanks for the help! I haven't removed the front main seal yet because I can't get the crank pulley off. I've tried swearing at it, tapping it (gently) with a hammer, prying on it with a crow bar, wiggling it with my hands, etc. It's been soaking for 2 days in penetrating oil, but that SOB just doesn't want to move.

Any thoughts on which balance shaft is left and which is right? I'm not sure if it's left/right facing the front of the car, or left/right facing from the rear of the car. I wish Ian had just written upper and lower on the bags of seals...

FYI--You will know by the size of the seal and the rotation.

Read the "Caution" in Clarks info (down the page)
Balance Shaft Oil Seal Replacement

Pelican is waaayyy better than this guy "Ian"

More suggestions.

The cam shaft seal. If it is not leaking, you might want to leave it alone.
Did you get the new "updated" cam shaft bolt? A must!

If you decide to change the seal:
Bennington Motorsports

I hope you got the full front seal kit with collars and cam bolt.

I think Ian is a pretty good guy. His prices are expensive for individual items, but the kits he sells are good deals and include everything. I've pieced together the kits on Pelican and it's about 10-20 bucks more.

I haven't looked at the bolt that came with my cam housing reseal kit, but I'm assuming it's the updated one. The front engine seal kit I got did not include the sleeves. If the sleeves are worn/grooved when I remove them then I'll replace them

Are there any other ways to tell if I have the new style water pump or not? None of my rulers have marks that start at the very end so I can't measure the height of the groove. The water pump is brand new, so I'm assuming that it's the new style pump.

4.5mm is about the thickness of 3 quarters.
