oil consumption in 924S...HELP!!

I am experiencing some serious oil consumption in a 924S, 2.5 cylinder.

It is using about a quart every 250 miles, the engine looks very clean with no leaks, and I can see no smoke from the tail pipe.

The car only has 77K miles, so could the rings be stuck or what else should I look at??

Thanks!!!

Run a compression test on the car.

Also, check your coolant to see if you have any oil in there.

These cars can burn a lot of oil and still be within spec.

Maximum allowable oil consumption is 1.5 quarts every 600 miles.

Here's some more info....I did not see in oil in the water or water in the oil. I still haven't checked the compression, but the oil pressure is great, the engine runs cool, and there is no loss of power...

Only what I would consider to be major oil consumption as I had a '87 944 with the same type engine that only used about a 1/2 quart every 3000 miles and it had 130K miles on the clock.

Any help is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,
Mark

Just to venture a guess-hardened valve stem seals. With no visible oil leakage or smoke, you could be drawing the oil into the engine. The consumption is really high and there has to be another cause.

Try the Valvoline oil that is made for higher mileage cars. it is designed to make old seals swell a bit and reduce oil consumption. I used it it my 87 944S, allthough it seems my consumption was not as high as yours, it did help considerably.

OK...thanks for all the responses. Here is an update:

I just bought the car on Tuesday and drove it home (250 miles) and that is when it seemed to use the most oil. I was travelling back at an average speed of 75-85 mph.

I topped off the oil after the trip and have driven it home the last two nights, putting about 60 miles on the car at an average speed of about 60-65 mph and have noticed no oil usage.

Since the car does have low miles and was apparently sitting for about three months before my purchase is it possible it just needed driven some?? I plan on driving everyday at least for the next week to really check the oil problem out.

Any thoughts???
