Spring center clutch does not work
Hey guys,
I'm doing a flexplate damper conversion using an old clutch setup, but when i went to slide the torque tube on, it wont grab the splines on the clutch disk. The bell housing is bolted up, pressure plate is tight and torque tube is bolted on. however the torque tube can spin freely. Am i missing a part or something that i need? do i need a different torque tube? |

Pull the torque tube back and measure the distance the shaft is sticking out. Can you feel the shaft mate into the pilot bearing?
It is possible to slide the shaft in the torque tube housing, and if it has, it isn't long enought to engage the splines on the clutch. And you are sure you have a correct clutch disc, right? |

Thanks, yea i can feel it slide into the pilot bearing, splines on the clutch aren't long enough. Its not an original clutch thats why, its from like a ford ranger or so. I have extra 240mm clutches laying around that wont fit but im gonna use the spline part and weld on an extension on the clutch using the alignment tool to keep it all straight. Hopefully it works out

wait....how did u bolt in flywheel with the ranger clutch? OEM flywheel bolts won't clear the clutch disc. i run the ranger clutch and i had to use a shaved head bolt.
i'm running everything else stock. |

First I would not weld anything and expect it to last. Second I would run a 944 clutch disc.

Yes i have shaved flywheel bolts. I prolly wont use that welded extension. i found a used rubber clutch i think im gonna get. Def dont want to get another rubber part in there but i figure it will last for a lil while.

Why not just use a good 944 spring clutch disc with 944 pressure plate? I wouldn't use a 944 rubber disc.

Would you put in a used rubber damper? Why put in a used rubber clutch?

you can get a non sachs disk for less than $200 - i know it's not cheap compared to disks for other makes and models but it would probably last as long as you have the car - doing the clutch is a long process (8 - 10 hours) - you don't want to go back in there trying to save $200

Alright, im gonna just get the actual clutch like you guys sugested. One more thing tho, I read on a post, not sure if it was on this site or another 944 site, that if the tourque converter comes out, its difficult to reset the oil pump in the transmission? is this something that i have to be worried about or do i just slide it back on? I work a lot on GM's and their transmissions tourque converters just slide on and off, not sure if its completely different on these cars. Thanks again

Pretty sure you don't have to take the Torque Converter out, just the bolts that attach the flexplate to it, but maybe someone else will know for certain.

I know nothing about 944 auto transmissions but take a flashlight and look inside where the converter is suppose to go and compare it with the end of the converter to see if it has to go back on a certain way but I would drain the fluid down some to see but not drain all of the fluid out of the trans if you have to to see.
