944 wheel play tolerance

How can I tell if my wheel has too much play, or if it's normal as described by some members here? Only thing it could be is bearing or races in the hub... I think it's fine since I have normal tire wear.

Jack it up, and with wheels still on move them side to side or up/down. Obviously side to side in the front won't work, because then you'll just get the steering column play.

If you replcae bearings, you replace both the race and the bearing.

You can put the old races on your desk next to your old rollers

well.. the ball joints and strut mounts and steering rack and tie rods are all nice and tight but the wheel can be shaken a bit in I guess any direction... people here say it's normal and the mechanics I have talked to just don't know 944's and the old guy mechanic says too much play

Wheel should not have ANY perceptible play in the bearing. You can try to clean, repack and readjust to start. Don't forget to order wheel seals!

So what's the difference between "play" and the "looseness" that 944's supposedly have
