951 hit in the side, repair advice please

So, my 951 got hit in the side, and I'm looking for some advice on the repair. The door has a couple of large dents, and the rear quarter/door sill took a good hit. My body guy suggested replacing the quarter because of where the damage is, and also said he is concerned about matching 30 year old paint. Based on what the pics show, how would you guys approach the repair? His insurance is paying. Thanks!

I work in the body shop business i paint cars so i'm not a body guy but the door definitely can be repaired the quarter is bad but i seen worse and body guys were able to fix without replacing the quarters. Replacing quarters could get expensive and the other person insurance might claim that your car is total loss because the repairs cost more than the car value i'm not 100% how all the office stuff works, and were talking about a Porsche not a 80s toyota so that might affect how they value the car. As far as cant match 30 year old paint bs judging from the pictures your car still has lots of shine still and where the damage just pulled paint code get a close match and blend the door and rear quarter, make sure they remove the quarter glass window for paint

$100 for a used door, $150 for a quarter. The $ won't be in the parts it will be in labor and paint

It honestly depends on the skills of the shop that is doing the work. Older places may be more skilled with the old skool skills of beating and shaping metal, newer places may be into cut and replace. Whichever they are more comfortable with and will be less labor is prolly the right call.

I will tell you from experience that the metal there is bloody thick and hard to work with.

Sorry about the hit. Love the wheels.

I would not replace the quarter. It can be pulled out by a decent shop.

It wont be that hard to fix by an experience body man. Your problem will be when the insurance company totals it and if you keep it have to get a reconstructed title. That will hurt the resale value of the car. I have a customer who has a very nice 1991 Lexus. It got rear ended and the insurance company totaled it. She kept the car and ended up having me fix it. I repaired it for $650 It only nee two tail lights and align the sheet metal. But to retitle it cost her over $300

Thanks for all the good points. The painter did say he would do a full respray for another $1600 on top of the damage repair. He is an excellent P & B guy with a lot of experience with Porsche and Ferrari, and not set on panel repair, just said it's something to consider. I should have an estimate Monday, and I think my best bet is to try to claim some sort of devaluation and hope if I'm sucessful it will cover the full respray.

Hell, my 87 has been totaled twice in the last 20 year.. I still keep fixing it and driving it.. It doesn't know the difference.. Anyone who looks at these cars as an "investment" to make money is going to be sorely disappointed. I don't care really. I'm driving my baby that I've had for 25 years coming up in February.

was an insurance damage field adjuster for over 30 years any good body shop will have no problem repairing the damages however if you decide to do the repairs yourself just swapping the door and putting a used quarter panel would be easier and require much less straightening skill depending on what appraiser the insurance company sends will determine if the car gets totaled (miles/condition) its a bit more paperwork to total it but in most cases easiier for him/her in the long run also the appraiser relationship with the shop you choose is going to be the determining factor If they total the car you get book value plus dealer prep and sales tax... then you can retain the salvage for 10%-20% of the book value and fix it your self with used parts for under $1000

From porcupine to beautiful. Looks like you have good metal man. The British TV show "Wheeler Dealers" had a 924 with similar damage, Edd pulled out the quarter panel the old fashioned way with drilled holes and a slide hammer. A few seasons later he used a similar welding method on a Ferrari 308 and I was amazed. Very impressive system, hope I never need it

Wow. Nice and straight again. And did you decide to respray the whole car?

If your guys paint is as good as the bodywork, that will be gorgeous when done. Still lusting after your wheels.

Nice job so far. Tell them to take the door handle off. It comes off super easy as in one screw!

Nice paint job, I had a looser pos crunch my door, hit and run. I found a door at a junk yard, had it painted , and with the help of a body shop buddy, I installed the door. Lots of fun stuff to break and disconnect on the 951, lots of stuff.......
