Did the 86 951 come with 15" wheels?
I thought that the brakes on a 951 required 16"s?

16" were standard on the '86 951. I didn't think 15's would fit either. Maybe this guy doesn't know.....

I heard that the European '85 951 had 15". If you check the part numbers, it will be a 951 part. I still have my original 15" over the 951 brake upgrade on my '86 n/a.

So I guess my question now is, did the 951's brakes ever change in size to require a larger wheel size? If so, what year?

As stock, 15" wheels were never fitted on the Euro 944 Turbo.
I don't know which wheel has a 951 number on it, but having a 951 number doesn't necessarily mean it is a part used in 944 Turbo production. I just looked on the parts list and the 15" wheel is the stock wheel for all 944 models before 1986..but not Turbo. BTW the spare is a 928 part number..see what I mean?

On the '86 Turbo, 16" Phone Dials were standard equipment and 16" Fuchs were optional. In '87, the size wheel did change, but not in diameter. The offset changed due to the use of ABS. Now, ABS was optional in '87, but all '87s got the ABS spindle and hub regardless of whether they were equipped with ABS.
The '86 and earlier 944s and Turbos used a 23 mm offset wheel both front and rear while the '87 and later cars used a 52 mm offset F/R . You can use the later wheels on the earlier cars. However it requires the use of spacers. Hope this helps. Regards, Fletch

This has been discussed at length on the Rennlist forum. The 1985.5 EURO 951 did have 15" phone dials on it. This is a tight fit, but works on the "early offset" cars. Late offset I am not sure of. The 951 caliper size was never changed until 1988 with the advent of the 951S model (928s4 fronts, effectively).
I know that my old 15" spare fits on my rear wheels with the 951 rear brakes on it, but there is no hope of it clearing the 928s4 calipers on the front of my car. 16" 951 fuchs only fit with about 1mm of clearance on the outboard bleeder valve, and that is only with longer studs and a 1/4" spacer. Hope that helps, Tifo

Well, it might have been discussed on Rennlist, but Euro 951 did not come with 15" as stock. ALL of them came with 16" wheels, it is in the brochure, the Model year introduction books and was one of the selling points of the car. I worked on these cars both in the UK and other markets, I have never seen one, and I expect if you actually ask Porsche (who, funnily enough made them) they woudl say the same thing. Yet again, speculation and pure guesswork suddenly becomes "fact".
15' wheels can be used as winter wheels. 1986 MY 951 (production began in 1985) used either the 16" phone dial or Fuchs wheels. Quote from model intro book. part number WKS 003 021, Page 35 "The most important characteristics of the Porsche 944 turbo as compared with the Porsche 944 Mod. 85/2:" "Pressure diecast wheels, front 7 x 16, rear 8 x 16 as STANDARD equipment" Hope this helps

Well, back to the car that was initially commented on. I emailed the guy and asked him if those were the original wheels. He said that no, the original wheels were 16" phone dials and that these were only 15".

In the face of unending discussions of "well, I don't know but I guess" or similar when accurate information is easily available from Porsche or Porsche brochures, tact and diplomacy is not that high on my list.
We all are on this board to learn and understand Porsches and share our enthusiasm so it's up to everyone to make sure that the information is as accurate as possible. I make my living working with these cars and use the BBS to find things out, but sometimes this " I guess" stuff gets a little bit more than annoying................
