First to second shift
Is it just me,(probably), or is the 1st to 2nd shift in the 944 one of the hardest to make gracefully? I've had a 944 NA for years and have had several other sports cars. I just cannot get the hang of it. Even the long distance shifter on my 912 was easier.
Once I'm in second everything is goodness if I keep the revs in the sweet spot. It just makes the 1-2 stand out more. I know they designed the 944 as a high speed runner, but the balky 1-2 shift takes the fun out of driving it in city traffic. I'd really like to hear how some of you hotshoes do this right. What's the best RPM to shift? Any tricks? Short shift kit users? -Old dog looking for new tricks- SmileWavy |
I have same problem. I also have 85w gear oil in my tranny. It is really hard to shift when tranny is cold but when it warms up it gets easy but not as easy as other cars. I run 85w becasue I do alot of long distance driving and it is very hot over here.

When you say gracefully, what exactly do you mean?
Does it shift hard, does the car want to hop on you? Normally I shift at about 20MPH from first to second with no problems. I would suggest checking the tranny oil and making sure your clutch is adjusted properly. AFJuvat |
I have Swepco synthetic tranny oil in my car, and it did take away a little of the notchiness in the 1-2 shift.
The 1-2 shift notchiness is a typical characteristic of the 924/944 series. You may want to vary the shift point: shift into second at higher and lower RPM's: that may help. -Z-man. |
Just allways shift at 6000 and rip it back until you hear the back tires chirp..:) seriously my tranny is the same way...its hard to explain but it seems like there is a big distance between 1-2nd gear.-chris

Thanks for the feedback!
Thanks for the feedback guys. I guess this is just one of the things I have to learn to love for the sweet handling.

The PO of mine complimented me on the way I was able to "master' the 1-2 shift on the test drive (whatever...he was trying to sell a car). My belief is that this was Porsche's way of reminding us that N/A's are not meant to be fast off the line.
A strong 2-3 shift, and few cars are left hanging in...and none when the twisties hit. I've had mine for about 11 mo.s and 8k, I still feel a little embarassed when I dump the clutch and get the torque tube shudder:rolleyes: but when the grin factor kicks in:cool: |
It's rough with me too but I have the hang of it... You can't force it you have to ease it in and you can kinda feel it slide in... I guess it's the syncro's at work maybe? Like someone said it's not a dragracer. I go really easy off the line untill I'm in 2nd and a hard 2nd gear run with a quick shift to 3rd makes up for the rough 1-2 shift

I have an 83 944 and an 82 924 and neither have an issue shifting from 1st to 2nd. Also my friends 1989 944S2... no issue that I can recall.
Eric Oh parting the 83 944 now. But trans is good :D |
