your favorite oil filter wrench/socket
great - I broke my cheap oil filter wrench/socket (four spot welds holding it together). gotta upgrade. what's your favorite?
I saw two on Pelican: Pelican Parts.com - Oil Filter Removal Socket, 74mm 3/8" drive, For M102, M103, M104, M111, M112, M113, M119, M120, M137, M155, M272, M275, M285, OM611, OM612, OM613, OM628, OM646, OM647, OM648 Engines Pelican Parts.com - Oil Filter Socket - 74mm How do the "jam bolts" work on that one up there? Paragon has one, maybe Arnworx. is the Hazet worth it? UPDATE: might as well add : from the shop manual, vol.1: Mann & Hummel designation LS 7 special tool 9204 oil filter torque 20 Nm ( 14 ft. lb)

I prefer the universal variety:
![]() I mean, c'mon, you're not going to use the filter again once you remove it. The channel locks are quick and easy, and can get into just about every angle, on the hoist, from above, lying on your back with the car on stands, etc. One of the best tools my dad ever bought for me when I was doing light mechanics working my way through college.

My two bare hands on a cleaned filter....if that dosen't work, I use the big-azz channel locks like shown above (just about the same size too).

The Harbor Freight oil filter pliers is good too. I have an end cap wrench but it only fits a subset of the 944 filters and does not update itself when filters change.

Some backstory : using a Mahle filter. Had to go to the 25" breaker - that's when the filter socket broke at the four welds between the detent and sleeve (?).
I plan to heat the filter with driving before removing it again. |

Any oil filter removal tool that breaks indicates one (or more) of the following: - a defective tool, a careless owner/PO/shop over-torqued the filter, and/or the filter hasn't been removed in ages and has glazed itself stuck, plus any of the above when combined with dry contact surfaces upon installation.

Spray the filter mating surface with PBBlaster or some other similar penetrating oil before running heat cycles. The big channel locks will get that mofo off of there. Don't be afraid to mangle it during the process!

If I can't turn it with my hand, I use anything that can help. I have a band style wrench with a swivel handle, old timing belts, aforementioned channel locks, screw drivers, and a 15 year old.
The 15 year old got the last one off on his mothers' MDX. My favorite is the 15 year old.

I've done that before also, when out of ideas.....shove a screwdriver through both sides and turn it like a handle.

I don't know how many times I've done that. Way too many though. If you oil the seal people...

@mattdavis11 : I oil the seal - or might have used silicone grease as an experiment.

Harley Davidson Dyna Glide series oil filter wrench. It has a cut out area to clear the Harley's crank sensor that is perfectly placed for hose clearance for removing my S2's filter.

I wish I had photos of some of the oil filters I've removed after utilizing the self adjusting oil filter wrench, the screwdriver attack, and the Channel Locks mangling! I'm pretty sure in NY or San Francisco I coulda got a nice artistic collectors price for these one of a kind statements.
