944 85 1/2 to 88 will all bolt right in. 89 is 2.7L 8 valve.
how much conversion will i have to do to get the 90 3.0L or the 89 2.8L in my car?
That's easy..how much money do you want to spend?
i dont know i just whated to look at what i could put in my car since im going to spend about 1,500 on my egine. soo i thought about droping in a newer more HP engine. would i have to chang my tranny for the 3.0L or 2.8L??

If you are going to do all the work, you have enough money to buy a used engine, install a new clutch, water pump, all the belts and tensioners, replace the oil pan and cam box gaskets and front seals and engine mounts.
If you are going to pay a shop...you haven't got enough to do much.. Sorry, but that is the reality of the situation. What's wrong with your engine? |
the water pump need to be replaced (way over dude) timing belt (way over dude) all the othere belt and stander stuff, fule rail need to be replaced, the intake manafold gasket need to be replace. some were on the top of the block oil comes out of. radiator need to be replaced. timing cover is broke were the hose comes in from the air box.
what do i need to do to get the 3.0L in my car? tranny?? what??
i can probly have some people help me do must of the work.
The 3.0L will fit, you have to find one first ..probably about $1500 and up, you will need a good radiator, new engine mounts, the wiring harness and computer and wiring diargrams for your car and the engine. If you can get good help and know what you are doing...about $2500 should buy all the parts you need.
You will have to replace the water pump, belts, timing chain tensioner and chain of the used engine as preventative maintenance. |
tranny will not need to be changed but i was told that if you have an old 944 tranny and put in sugnificantly more hp..ie:3.0 engine...you might blow it pretty quick
lol, wekk then i would have to drope in a use tranny :-P thanx for all you help i guss i need to start saving more money. c-ya

There's a 968 on Ebay right now. It's been hit in the front and rear but it's supposedly still drivable. Parts that could be used on a 944 are: Engine, trans, DME & wiring harness, torque tube, hatch w/ bridge spoiler & wiper, mirrors, door handles, perfect black interior, & wheels. Last I looked it was going for around $7000.00. If I had the cash I seriously consider it.

I NEED TO TURBO CHARGE!!! ARGH!!!!!!!! Hey, whats the deal with the 968 6 speed trans? Better then a 951 trans?
Depends on the year- The early 968 trans were plagued by the dreaded "pilot bearing woes". The things would wail and eventually burn out- Porsche wouldn't cover it under warranty and a lot of people got angry. I think the later years were ok(?)
Actually the pinion and differential carrier bearings were covered by Porsche - until the warranty ran out - then it was $2000+ each time you had to have them fixed ($300 in parts, the rest was labor). It took them a few years to get the bugs worked out, so some of the earlier cars had this work done 2 and 3 times. Late 94 and 95 68's are generally good, the earlier models were really a crap shoot. If the car has had the work done in the last few years, it should be good to go, since Porsche updated all of the parts.
Can you drop a 68 tranny into a 44, yes -why would you want to? Your accelleration may be slightly improved but still, the biggest limitation to performance in the 44 is the engine - the stock transmission is rated for well over 170 MPH as it is. A cheaper and more sensable alternative would be to put a 924S transmission in it, which were geared a bit differently - end result is more power in 5th gear. With all of these modifications you are talking about, why don't you just save up your money and buy either a 951, 944S2 or a 968? FYI, the fastest production model was the 944 Turbo S, which at 250 HP, was faster than the 968. Ok, whats my point, yes you can do all of those modifications, by the time you are done, you are damn close to buying a factory car that does the same thing you modified your car to do. AFJuvat |
