LOL! This reminds me of a Happy Days episode where Richy and the guys drive up to his house in an old junker they had bought. Had hardly any muffler left. Mr. Cunningham remarks to the guys that the exhaust is very noisy and must have a hole in it.

Almost in unison the guys remark; "Yeah! Isn't that COOL!!!".

There is only one vehicle I know of that sounds "cool" without a muffler and that's a P-38 with counter rotating Rolls-Royce V-12s at 15 feet AGL doing a high speed pass about 30 feet in front of you.

Ok, ok! Any WW2 aircraft with a V-12 Rolls-Royce doing a high speed pass!!!!

I always thought 747's had a great sounding exhaust but then I grew up near an airport.
Anyway, to get back to the beginning of the post.
On 944s; unless your current system is clogged, don't hold your breath waiting for a hp gain with a exhaust swap. You can pick up a hp or two at a reasonable cost buy swapping your stock cat with something high-flow (like a Dynomax). I have an Ansa cat back from with a high flow with that set up. It's a bit louder when the back pressure kicks but not obnoxious.
On the other hand, going free flow on a turbo is what it's all about! Search the archives for more info. I think there is ...cough...cough...one or two posts on the subject already out there.

Good luck

Your not going to want to do free flow then That would be loud as a *****! I think I need a new exhaust. I hear alot of hollow like rattling coming from the back of the car, also one of the hook thingies just broke off. you know the thing the hooks onto the rubber hanger. Don't want somthing to expensive though.

Growing up, the local inland sourthern California airport was also the base for all of the fire bombing aircraft. Mostly WW2 B-17 bombers with some of the old torpedo bombers. My parents and us four kids would get a bag of hamburgers and sit at the end of the runway and watch them land and take off for summer entertainment.

You could get close enough to touch the wheels over head.

Years later we got a surprise one day when a couple of Grumman TigerCats came in to assist. These are post WW2 twin engine Navy night fighter interceptors that are very little wing and fuselage and mostly twin engine dual row radials. these had enormous retardant tanks under them. You would have thought they would never leave the runway. Only saw them that one year.

The sound of those twin row radials is very close to the Roll-Royce but in an American kind of way.

i have an 87 944 na and i live in a state without emissions testing, and my stock cat was tested in its old state and found to be worthless, so i put a glasspack free flow muffler where the cat was and a flowmaster free flow muffler in place of the stock muffler. the car def revs quicker. the gain in performance came solely from removing the cat. removing the cat can cause a slightly ricey resonation at about 3 krpms due to the hollow glasspack i put in place of the cat. the muffler is pretty much solely for sound, no real performance gain there. high flow cats are expensive, but if you live in a state with emissions testing, then you need to go that route. good luck.

High flow cats for Porsches are expensive- not so expensive for other cars.
The difference? None that I know of.
Going with a dynomax high-flow on my car was only $210 installed.
Going with a glass pack (or resignator) in place of the cat may be ok if you are in a non-emission state, but selling the car to an out of state buyer may become a problem (unless you plan to drive your car forever-like me).

i went to a local muffler shop, my flowmaster was 100 installed. it is illegal for shops to do a cat replacement with anything but a cat, they get fined bigtime if the put a pipe in place of your cat. that said, i know the guy who did my cat replacement real well, so he hooked me up. you can get a cherry bomb, which is a glasspack muffler, from pep boys for like 30 bucks and just weld it up, i'm not sure what brand my glasspack is, but its not a cherry bomb, my muffler shop had it in stock. any local muffler shop will have a glasspack. good luck.
