Battery not charging

My 83 944 na battery keeps dying so I took it to auto zone and had them test the battery they told me the alternator is not charging the battery, so I removed the alternator and took it in and they put it on the machine and it passed, I took the battery off and another store tested the battery and he said the battery lost a cell so I bought a new battery and put it on and once again the battery dies. So I took it back in and the meter said alternators not charging again. Could it be something inbetween the alternator and battery? What is going on??

I have an '86 and my problem with charging was the voltage regulator... rear of alternator. The thing lasted for over 20 years.

spring loaded contacts... wear on the contact itself and reduced tension on the spring could cause an intermittent connection until it actually permanently fails...

I'd start with the alternator belt tension, voltage regulator, then the alternator itself. Put a voltmeter on the battery when the engine is running and see if you have at least 13.8v. If not, and with the RPM over 2000 you still don't have it, then do the above in order.

I'm not sure if the 944 is like the 924. but on mine, if the battery light in dash doesnt come on when KO EO you won't get a charge. replace light bulb in dash, excite wire will activate alternator. Thats based off my 924, I just went through all this.

In my experience, the alternator needs to be replaced every 5ish years. My current one is on year 7 though, but generally it's been 5.

looking back on this, the brushes on your regulator look shot. They should be sticking out about another 1/4 inch to make good connection. if you replace the alternator... dont forget to remove the condenser off the back!
after you hit 4k rpm you start hearing it through the speakers

check to see if you have 12v to the small blue wire with the key in the on position. also check to see if your little alternator charging light comes on at the cluster with the key in the on position. i had to run a new wire from the instrument cluster to the alternator to replace the blue wire because there was a break in the wire and my alternator wouldnt charge the battery.
