Junk yard find update and Lifter questions
Ok, got new cam chain and pads in. cam has good teeth solenoid works. Borescope shows nothing to be conserned about with the cylinders. Goin to start cleaning the top of the head and lifters with head still on car.
now this has sat for 6 years. Head was rebuilt, new lifters valves seals etc. The top of the head is filthy. it was left open for quite a while..The hood was closed but the cover was off. Lifters have surface rust. I poured a quart of oil on top of everything to let it soak up. Questions. 1. do the lifters pull right out from the top? 2. if so what is the best way to clean them? pull them and let em soak in a solution? 3. is there a test to see if they are still good? 4. I also have a 928. we run into issues with the cam timing gear. does this gear have history of wear? I am unsure if my gear is new. it is rusty tho. so I am gonna clean it up and put a straight edge across the teeth.. Does anyone know what the dimensions of a new gears teeth are? thnx |

I see you have good advice for the 968:
Cam shaft removal 968 Here is a little information about the lifters from Bennington Motorsports: Bennington Motorsports The only change I make is that to test the lifter/cam follower, press in the button and compare to others. Hard feel is best--replace "soft", easy to press in lifters If you need spares, get good used INA lifters---new INA lifters have a failure rate. Repeating Bennington---lifters go in the same bore they came out of. Timing Gear? Not enough experience. You already have the main failure part--pads. GL J_AZ

For the 16v, the cams have to come off and they come out the top. The 8v lifters come out the bottom of the cam housing once it is removed from the head.
