A sound when clutch is going bad

87 944 NA

when the clutch is going bad and the throttle is released - while still in gear, a rather loud grinding-like noise occurs. It is not a horrible loud deafening sound, but a few levels below that. I think it gets worse as the clutch gets worse.

How exactly does release of the throttle produce this sound?

it is the engine decelerating faster than the transaxle, thus the flywheel is turning against the friction disk and/or the pressure plate turning against the friction disk.
