Rebuilt water pumps w/o inferior parts

These days I am concerned about buying either a new or rebuilt water pump because of the ubiquitous prevalence of questionable quality seals and bearings from low-cost sources (China, etc). I am considering having my water pump rebuilt by the "Flying Dutchman" of Selma, OR who claims to use American seals (he doesn't say about the bearings). Has anyone used his rebuild service? Other custom rebuilders? I would rather have my pump rebuilt than take my chances on an unknown pump with the cheapest possible rebuild components. Does anyone know where the Pelican pumps are manufactured (Laso brand) or rebuilt?

I have used Pelicans re man pump and was happy with it. The pump includes the pump gasket but doesn't tell you this in the description. I installed the pump a bought three months ago. Pelican is very prompt on returning core charges also, Hope this helps.

strath44,

I would not install a Deutsch Parts WP if they were free!!!

Come on, cheap is cheap is cheap. What quality is the bearing and seal for $100 and a new cast body......crap parts and production have to be used to cut cost.

If you want a good rebuilt pump that has a golden reputation (search RL)---buy a Zims rebuilt for about $99 exchange.
Zims has professional rebuilders and use the best bearing and seal available--not a Chinese/N.Korean knockoff.
They only take back good used core WPs with no broken ears or impeller marks.

OR support our sponsor and buy from Pelican. New or rebuilt.

I've had 2 pelican rebuilt pumps that worked fine. The last one I just put in the other week was a new pump from zims because the price was right and I didn't have the funds for a core charge at the time. We'll see how it goes, but it looked nice.

I purchased a reman from CarQuest (Worldpac). It was still $190.00 but it came with a warrantee. No problems since the mid-November install (@3k miles).

I know not the quality of the pumps sold by pelican, but the majority of the replacement parts on my car were bought from Zims, including 2 water pumps. I feel somewhat bad about plugging for a company when Pelican creates an arena for us, but they've been there for my car since it was brought into the family in 1991.

When I lived in DFW, they were only 10 minutes down the road, so naturally they got my business. Great people, affordable, quality parts.

The only complaint in all those years, is an eight dollar Gates cam belt.

I wonder if zims will ship to the uk?

I'll email them and see, doubt I'll send my core back so will pay more for that, its still a fair bit cheaper than the best deal I can get one here locally which is about $590!

strath44,

Have you checked the UK 944 forums and read what local members recommend?

Might save shipping costs.

Hi, yes thanks, I'm actually on all those forums. However the number of 944 users are much less and the number doing work themselves even fewer.
I have been on this forum since I started out in 944's and find the advice is always top dollar and is a bit more tried and tested.

Zims has a new one for $150. It does come with a gasket even though it does not tell you that.
