Diesel Sound only at Idle

Hello all,

I noticed today the car making a diesel like noise at idle coming from what appears to be the cam tower (although I am not too certain of the exact location). I filled up with oil but the sound remains. Strangely it only is audible at idle. As soon as a tiny bit of throttle is given the engine note smooths out. Any ideas on what it could be?

Please don't be anything major, I just had my timing belt and clutch replaced.

Was the car sitting for a while? If they sit the oil drains from the lifters and the diesel sound happens from the cam tower. Not a issue, drive it and the sound will eventuallly go away.

Car has been driven regularly recently. Went on an hour drive and the sound was there at the beginning when idling and at the end when idling.

Pop your distributor cap off and check the rotor. If the cam bolt was reused after a reseal it could have backed out and the rotor may be striking the inside of the cap.

Could an exhaust manifold leak cause a diesel like sound?

Yes, but the diesel sound will be there at all engine speeds.
