2nd gear woes

Well, was driving home today in my ghetto'd out 944 and noticed the car strongly protesting shifting into 2nd gear above 3.5k or so RPM. Regular driving no issues, except recently I noticed a very slight noise and vibration shifting into 2nd gear, maybe once out of every 25 shifts. Today I tried to shift from first to second at 4.5k RPM and when I pull the shifter I got horrible sounds so I stopped trying to force it... synchro randomly died? The PO "said" he put in MT-90 but I think a change to my own MT-90 to be sure might help at least in the meantime...

Gawer,

IF you change the fluid, use a white (t-shirt) rag over the clean pail used to catch the fluid.

Look for silver slivers. If none found ---it may not be the transaxle.

I cannot go over your past 4,175 posts to find out if the PO changed the clutch.

It could be a bad TO bearing, broken spring in the clutch disc, the disc guide tube weld broke, the clutch fork, rod or bearings failed or ????

On daily driving, why are you shifting at such a high rpm? First gear is basically there to get the car moving.

The clutch disc was replaced in 2011. And I was going down a hill and hey, maybe one out of every 5,000 shifts I can waste a little gas

John, I hope it's just the transmission LOL

I don't remember the last time I shifted out of 1st below 4k rpm. Jk... kindof 1st is so short, you don't really get into a strong part of 2nd without winding it up a bit in 1st.

Will it go in if you wait for the rpm to come down before pushing the stick?

Yes, it shifts pretty normally or with a rare minor noise at lower RPM's. I'm pretty certain my transmission is original..

Silver would indicate spalling or other wear of the gear teeth or ring and pinion.
The synchro rings are made out of brass and the wear particles would be very small.

Change your gear oil and send a sample to blacksone and see what they say about it.
