Rain Got in 944 Turbo

Hey Guys,

Drove my new to me 951 to work the other day and it poured rain while I was in there. Didn't actually drive it in the rain.

Today I was looking in the storage compartments under the hatch carpet behind the fenders and some towels in there were wet. No other signs of water anywhere. Carpets are all dry. Hatch drains are clear, latch drains appear to be intact. Car has no sunroof. I did find one of the rear side markers had a gasket that wasn't seated properly on the driver's side but I got water in both sides and the pass side marker light was fine.

How could water get in there? Should I just not keep rags in those compartments? Looks like most of the water must have drained out. Any thoughts appreiciated.

Thanks,

Well....behind the fuel filler door there is a drain on the bottom, that when disconnected will let water into the rear storage area on the passenger side, but with a sunroof delete car the only other place I can think of is turn signals. They might need resealed. Since the car is new to you the water could have been in there for years. dry it out and use the good old hose test.

How rare are turbo sunroof delete cars?

Pretty rare. It was a special order to get a turbo in the US without a sunroof.
Don't know about ROW cars- This could possibly be a grey market car.

Thanks! I was looking at the drain hose from the fuel filler cavity. That was the only thing I could see on that side. Definitley looked like it was leaking on the driver's side through the side marker since the gasket was pushed in behind the lens and not sealing. So maybe different problem on each side.

The towels were left there by the PO but I know they were dry when I was rooting around back there before the rain. Will do the hose test that's a good idea. So I'll have to pull the carpet to re-connect that drain hose if it's loose I assume?

Seem to be pretty rare. This one was special ordered. It's an '87 with sunroof delete, rear wiper delete, no headlight washers, no cruise, no abs. Only options were the Reno radio, Stone Grey Metalic paint and Partial leather seats. Was actually delivered in March of '88.

WOW, really nice car. Also check around the tail lights. I have seen them leak after 25 years.

My car gets wet there. . .coming from the hatch glass separating from the frame. Check along the top of the glass, if you can see dimples in the glass your frame is distorted.

Uhg. Looks like I do see the dimples. These are supposed to be under the frame? Looks like another project goes on the list.
