Need info on 944 1987.5

I plan on buying a 944 restoration project. Springs look a little rusty but id like to see if they can last a little longer, struts/shocks are looking in decent condition. No rims or wheels, steering doesnt work, so i would like to know how to diagnose and fix the problem. Engine is still their intact and the belt/pulley is also their looking good. their is so much dust/dirt collect i cant even see the paint. The car has no keys so im gonna need to get those. All of the dash is not installed but is lying their on the passenger seat, windows are intact but their is a crack in the front window. Any info on how to install the dash and replacing front window would be appreciated. Front bumper is not installed but is lying next to it, front headlights are pretty screwed up could use lens and new bulb. So if their is any info or advice on tending to these problems, it would be deeply appreciated. I really do look foward to this project!

1. It's gonna cost you $5k+ if you do all the work yourself.
2. Take up all your weekends for the next 3 months just to make it roadworthy.
3. Require you to do a lot of reading, searching and asking a lot of questions.
4. After all that it will be worth no more than $3k

If you are ok with that the guys here will help you get it back on the road.

Admire your enthusiasm. GL

No wheels, no steering, no lights, no dash, broken glass, dubious paint, engine, trans, suspension, electrics...

Sorry I just presumed the po would pay him to tow it away

I know its a lot of work and it will definitely cost, but their is more then 2 in the ware house where i can buy another car for a parts car. I think i might be able to seal the deal for no more then 100 dollars(possibly 2), the man does not know anything about the car except that it is a porsche and he seems that he's just wanting to get it off the lot.

Also the dash and all those parts are there. It's either laying their with the car not installed, or it needs to be taken off another car in the warehouse to then be installed.

I'd recommend that you pass on it, even if they give you the $100 to take it. There's a lot of cars out there that are in good condition for around $4k. These cars are no fun when you spend more time working on them vs driving them. This one's going to be a real pain in the backside, as well as the wallet. They're supposed to be fun.

Problem is i dont have more then 300 dollars to spend, and either way 4k is way out of question. I dont think getting my hands on parts is going to be much of a problem. Its just a matter of knowledge that i will need. I really think i can do this i have all summer free time might as well make use of it and be productive.

Can't hardly go wrong for a few hundred. Will be a challange to make a running car for that but just for something to wrench on and fool around with and learn something should be a lot of fun. If you don't spend a lot you can always part them and probably get your money back.

If your doing it for the passion of the car then I say go for it. Take it slow and do it right. If you are doing it for profit, you will never make your money back after completion. Here's a good good posting showing if you have time some skill you can bring her back from the dead! Just my $0.02

You sound bored with little cash on hand. Probably not wise to start in on a 944 project. Do you know if either motor runs?

I would pass, but pedaling parts for money is not my gig. There might be some good bits there somewhere, but I don't see them in the pictures.

Body damage? I wouldn't take it for free lol...

If you can only afford $300... I don't think a 944 is for you sorry

thank you all for your opinions, despite that i had asked for info on reapairing these issues.
Despite that many would say this is a unworthy project, there is something that has just got me always back to this car. Their are plenty of other cars that are faster cheaper to fix, but i want to experience a pure porsche so thank you for the opinions but i need info on how to fix these issues, lol.

Well, there's sources like the info you can glean from this forum via "search" and there's Rennlist, 944online and Clark's Garage. However you will need a lot of parts, which is usually a good amount of money, Porsche parts can be pricey. For instance you will almost certainly want/need to replace the fuel hoses and fuel rail jumper hose. The jumper alone is almost $90 from Porsche

If you really love the car they can be found in half decent shape in then 2-3 range and really nice shape in the 3-5 range. I have always had a 944 in my life or not to far away. They are great cars and I would never drive anything else.

To play devils advocate for a minute, if you are looking for a "pure" Porsche experience take a look into the air cooled cars. Although they seem expensive at first look there are some that can be had for a very reasonable price and they are a whole different ball game to drive.

Regards
Dave
