Sound system help in a Porsche 944

Well I just recently bought the car and it has a crappy speaker in the car. I think what happened was that the original speakers blew out and the guy didn't really listen to music so he just put a crappy speaker in it(he was an older guy) well, I like music, so I wanna upgrade. I really dont wanna spend a LOT of money. And honestly, I do not wanna do any cutting. So does anyone have any suggestions. And I don't need high performance speakers. Just something that will sound nice. Thanks for your help
Tyler

Infinity REF6432CF 2-Way 4" x 6" Car Audio Speakers- fit correctly and have the best sound for the size and cost - not expensive but fantastic speakers for front and rear. They are about $60.00 a pair new.

What year?

I have an '89 and I know that later models (after '87, not '85, I think?) have openings in the rear for 6.5 speakers. No cutting needed, the hole is already there, just need some holes to screw into. The bigger, round speaker will likely sound much better than any 4x6 plate or 4x6 oval that you will find

You should have the cut-outs for the 6.5's. Good sound for a good price would be to use the 6.5's and forgo the subwoofer. Thats exactly what I', running and it sounds pretty good even with a crappy head unit

Mr. Rodgers,
Do you have an amp? And I am not sure what size speakers are in it. The car is in the shop getting the power steering rack replaced. But like I said, its an 88 944. and are the 6.5's only in the rear? if so is the 4x6 in the front
Thanks,
Tyler

most likely, you'll have some crappy 4x6's front and back. If you take the 4x6's out of the back, there will be a mounting plate that you also remove, leaving a big hole for a 6.5 incher. The only speaker that fits in the front without modification is a 4x6. I am running an amp mounted under the glove box

the problem with the sound systems in this car are two fold

the decks suck - that is an easy fix though, with any decent aftermarket deck

the installation of the speakers is piss poor - this one is largely improved by installing dynamat extreme on the outer skins of the body of the car, and all over the rear area - further, there is a fairly simple modification to the rear speaker area that essentially creates and enclosure for the 6.5 so it can do its job - in the end, a dramatic improvement is made in the sound of whatever speakers are installed, as well as a huge reduction in road noise, which allows whatever you do have in there to sound as good as it can

You might want a subwoofer if you put 4x6s in the rear. I put Pioneers in the front and Xplod speakers in the rear of my 84, and while it's a bit better, they just don't have the low end bigger speakers do. I have a 10" sub in mine and it's nice to hear the low end of the music, and not too big or too loud.

What kind of music do you listen too? do you like it loud?

You need to go listen to a set of speakers, When i was selling car audio not to long ago the 2 big names were Polk Audio and Infinity. Both are great speakers but the polk have better vocals that carry further and better lower end bass. The infinity speakers are great and I used to have them before i upgraded to 6.5 components. Just go to lets say best buy they carry inifiity and polk too and compare both of them. The infinity will distort sooner then the polk when you turn up the volume and the material of the polk is better and more durable then the plastic the infinity speakers are using. finally after i say 3-5 years my ifinity speakers gave out and the polks are still like new.

Just go listen to some speakers and see which sound best for you're budget and you can later buy them online to save more $$.

I have Polk MM series all around. 4x6 up front, 6.5 in the rear. Contemplating adding the MM 10" sub in one of the cubbies.

+1 on the dynamat. These cars came with the bare minimum as far as sound/heat deadening goes

The amp is only a 60x4 @ 2ohm, but it seems to do the job for what I have in there now

I listen to about everything, and yes I will probably get something that has a better base quality. And I like to listen to music with the windown down, and be able to here it just fine, so yes, I would say I listen to it loudly. So where did you get your amp at? What brand is it?
Thanks
Tyler

There is an inexpensive way to add plenty of Bass notes other than going with a Sub-Woofer. A good Sub-woofer system would consist of: Sub-woofer, correct box, and an extra amplifier dedicated for it. I have the Sub-woofer system installed, but up front I have an extra pair of speakers installed that gave me all of the bass sound I will need.

PYLE PLG-54 are 5.25" woofers that are not expensive, fit almost anywhere, and are rated for 200 watts. They look like a small Sub-woofer and sound like a bigger one. So my 10" JL Audio with a 500watt amplifier is now almost overkill. The PYLE subs are not expensive either, at $30.00 per pair NIB. Absolutely amazing the deep sound they produce. For a 5.25" speaker the 30oz. magnet on the back are very large for it - they work well.

Im trying to look it up. are these speakers a yellowish color? The PYLE PLG-54 that is. And if I did decide to get these would I need to purchase an amp? and these would fit in the 4x6 and 6.5 layout? Thank you

i would enclose the rear speaker areas and install JL Audio speakers - there are few from which to choose - the TR 650 CXi isn't a bad choice, and go down to 59hz

or you could install the C3 650 and go down to 48hz - i have these in the SL550 - very nice

not sure i'd run the polk - 2.7ohm - that might be hard on the deck - i know they say they are compatible with nearly everything, but that seems awfully low

the reviews aren't very good either

pretty sure i'm going to try the C3s in my blue 968 in the doors - i have kenwood 5.25 woofers and a 1" tweeter now, and i want more low mid and better placement than the stock location - i have similar JL units in the front of the white car, though they don't go quite as low, and they sound really good - much warmer than any 5.25 that i have heard - i am only concerned about the weight of the speaker in the door

with the C3s in the rear, and with the enclosure mod i developed for the rear speaker area, you may not need a sub
