Windshield Washer Electrical

Not getting any power to the wiring on the windshield washer pump. Windshield wipers move when steering console switch is depressed, but no fluid. Also seems to be slightly intermittent.

Couldn't find workshop manual to help me diagnose.

Am I looking for a relay or ground? Where should I start my search for this electrical gremlin??

How did you check for power?

Pulled switch on steering column while putting a voltage tester against the wires of the pump.

Ah, you mean one of those voltage detectors? The best way to know for sure would be to plug in a meter into the end of the plug for the pump and check that way. You probably have power, just a bad pump motor. I think I picked mine up for $12

Hi JD, the washer pump circuit is pretty straightforward. I have attached a copy of the wiring diagram for you. Basically the power comes directly from the switch, there is no relay involved for the pump. Could be wire broken/bad contact, or bad switch. Although you say the wipers move when you operate the switch, there could be just enough current to start the intermittent wiper relay, but not enough to drive the pump motor. Contacts in switch might need a clean? I have highlighted the areas of interest on the diagram - good luck!

The Pelican auto photo resize has made this diagram a bit small, but I hope you can see what I am talking about. If not, let me know and I can send smaller 'chunks' of diagram for you.

Hi All,

Just giving a quick update. Thanks Rhett for the detailed diagram will get to sorting through that shortly! I plugged a multi meter into the positive (green) end of the connector. The voltage appeared to be completely eratic when I depressed the switch on the steering column. What would this mean??

EDIT: Wasn't using the multimeter correctly. Can't say I use one very often. Switched it to DC Volt. I'm getting 11.34 11.38 when the switch is depressed.

That mean the bump is bad or should I be getting exactly 12?

Hi JD, the voltage you are getting should be fine for a car that is not running, would be more if the alternator was turning..

So, it could simply be a bad pump as mentioned by Bradical. Have you taken the pump out and tried 12V on it - on the bench? Also, what condition are the connectors, they might just need a good clean, and what about the ground connection, is this good and clean too?

Good luck - hope you solve it soon..

Pump was bad! Thanks to Rhett and Bradical for the info and where to look.

Pump cost me 19.99, took off the old mounting plate and ziptied the new pump to it. Tried bolting but the head of the bolt prevent the factory plastic knobs from fitting in the bracket. Will figure out a neater solution soon. But at least it works.

Thanks Pelicans.

Been there and done that and the pump would whir and never squirt consistently, like there is a clog in the system.

What next?

Check the pickup tube. I would pull all the tubing and blow it out with air. Is it a new pump or used?
