Unhappy BUMMER-clutch is going bye bye

Lately my clutch with 90k on it has been getting harder and harder to engage smoothly. Yesterday, I heard some chatter, and then it went away. This was on my way through the Santa Cruz mountains on Bear Creek Road--and it was the best time I had outside of an autocross!

Today, I could barely get 2nd, 4th or reverse gear to engage. oh well. My question is, is this usually the symptom of a clutch going away? The two times I've had the clutch replaced were when I totally munched the drivetrain due to youthful exuberance. I think this is the first time I didn't blow the clutch up prematurely, and am just wondering if it might be something else. I'd like to know what this might be before I take the car to Carerra Tech in Campbell @$85/hour.

It's a sport disc with lightweight flywheel, and I don't notice the pedal any closer to the floor or a sinking engagement point--just a more abrupt one.

twirling a dead chicken

Of course someone has to ask the obvious, so I'll be the one: Have you tried adjusting it? Perhaps you slave cylinder is crapping out on you. Did you get the heady aroma of burnt friction material?

How do you do that? I never smelled anything burning either.

90,000 on a clutch is about right.

If there is no noise of the rivets hitting the pressure pate or flywheel -- scraping and chattering -- then you can get away with just a disk.

Still you may find that the TO and pilot bearing may need to be replaced rather than just regreased.

Also your clutch slave cylinder may be going out if your brake reservoir is full. The clutch hydraulics use this reservoir too.

If there is any sign of leakage at the flywheel seal replace it too.

Hey thanks. I did hear some light but brief chattering on two separate occasions, about a month apart. I just ordered the Centerforce clutch for $388 plus $88 next day shipping on http://www.nopionline.com, and had it shipped to my mechanic. Hopefully, it'll be there tomorrow. It doesn't include the Pilot bearing or the TO bearing.

With $900 in labor, I'll be spending about $1500 total--Clutch replacement just hurts--but OoooOh Boy, I'm going back to the hills baby!

You should always "at least" replace the throw out bearing and pilot bearing and machine your flywheel

For the cost of the labor its good preventative maintenance....
